BBQ & Mexican (not chain) in N Dallas
I'm staying at the Embassy Suites at the intersection of the 635 and 75 (between Richardson and Bouchard) for 3 days. Does anyone have any suggestions for good Texas BBQ and good Mexican? I'm generally not a frequenter of chain restaurants. I won't have a car, but if there's a place at which I need to eat before I die, I'd consider splurging on a cab ride!
You're kinda in a dead zone at the Embassy suite, but if you want some kinda OK BBQ, but a Hooters atmosphere, Bone Daddy's is just up the block at 75 and Spring Valley. There is a Popasitos just up 75 , It's a chain, but a nice mexican chain. Embassy suites may have a shuttle to tun you to some of the nearest spots. Don't believe you are going to able to walk to any spots. Be careful, not the nicest neighborhood.
Depends on where you are coming from.....if you are looking for Mexican or BBQ. You might not have great luck if you are from the Carolinas, Tennessee or Texas Hill Country if you are looking for great BBQ. There really are no great BBQ places here....the one I really liked burned down but in the middle of a rebuild. Might try Sonny Bryan on Inwood Rd @ Harry Hines Blvd - close to Parkland Hospital (our large county hospital) it will be a haul and is only open for lunch. I wouldn't call it a restaurant to eat at before you die though. Mexican you might have several options just a bit north of your location Coit & Spring Valley is Cuquitas that serves some pretty great things....not really sure what you are looking for.
El Rancho Supermercado almost at the same intersection is newly opened and have heard great things about their taqueria style meats in the "deli" type section.
I believe the best place for Mexican is Taquerias El Feugo on Campbell Rd @ Plano Rd. They have handmade tortillas, fresh tasting dishes, and hot salsa (not the mild watered down tomatoey crap). I believe that is worth a cab ride.
Our small Chinatown off Main/Beltline @ Greenville is excellent for authentic chinese....which is the best area in the metroplex for that cuisine. Some restaurants are Kirin Court, First Chinese BBQ and Kings Noodle (all excellent).
