First Review? Genwa on Wilshire
I came here this past Saturday night for dinner with my family and overall I was disappointed. I come from a mixed background (chinese/korean) and am well versed in these cultural foods so when my parents suggested that we try the new korean place around the corner I thought, 'why not?' We walk in and are greeted/seated in a booth which I thought was spacious, the decor was alright. The lighting was dim - I hate those places where it's so dim that you're about to go blind -.- Everybody here spoke fluent english so no language barrier and that's when I figured it out:
It's a korean BBQ restaurant with a Japanese name that has a fusion atmosphere and catering towards american people
Service: Needs to be improved, the staff needs to learn how korean food is served/eaten
Food: I ordered the galbi, my sister ordered the bim pap and my mother the udon
We noticed and mentioned to ourselves that this must not be your traditional korean restaurant because there were no side dishes brought out.
I got my galbi first and O_O at the portion, about 10 tiny pieces with 2 bone. It's being cooked up when out comes the bim pap in what looks like a huge portion but it's just a farce because it's poured in a large round stone pot that's pretty flat so it's fooling. One male waiter starts pouring the hot sauce on the dish and my sister has to stop him and asks if she can pour it herself. The spicy sauce wasn't even spicy, they had supplied us with this sweet/spicy sauce that they often use on octopus dishes I get at other korean restaurants. the male waiter comes back again and asks if he can mix the bim pap, o.O we're not 4, we know how to mix it. A different waiter comes around and asks if he can mix it as well.
For those who don't know the waiter never pours it for you, nor mix it, they might make it too spicy and you're have to return it. So obviously we have a clueless wait staff, the guy was korean as well, so we're joking to ourselves that he probably doesn't eat korean food.
Around this time, they bring out the side dishes, nothing special so it was picked at. My galbi had to be the best thing at the table. It was tender, marinated perfectedly, since the portions were small we ordered a 2nd. Really delicious, I definitely recommend this dish if anybody goes. My mother's udon was alright, nothing special.
About this time we notice that it's a full house but there is no other korean, all american, my prediction was right, catering towards american ppl.
My family was disappointed that night, we'll probably go back on account that my mother knows the owner and service might be better 2nd time around.
Price: Eating with my family means that I don't have to pay but from what I remember, the galbi plate was about $13
