Met a friend for 7PM reservations on Fri. at The Fireplace in Brookline and had a good meal. He liked it more than me. I was starting to get sick so that might have had something to do with it. He started w/ a cup of chowder then we both had the specials, a nice thick pork chop w/ a good glaze, mashed sweet potato, some greens. I had the scallop special which was pretty good, 5 good sized sweet scallops w/ good broccoli rabe and truffled mashed potatoes. But the scallops and potato felt like I didn't need teeth to eat them, and pricey at $29. I did very much enjoy the dark & stormy which made me feel better, I'm liking ginger and ginger beer in anything. At first we wondered why we couldn't have a 7:30 res but it did get quite full. It's a comfortable place but the price point sure went up since I was there about 5 years ago.
Slogged around in the flurries on Sat. and grabbed a bbq beef bahn mi to go from New Saigon which made a nice dinner later on. Lots of crunch, a couple hard to chew pieces of meat but good over all and the deal of the weekend at $2.50. Sat in Berkeley Perk for a little bit w/ a hot chocolate and brownie which hit the spot.
Sun. I was too late to eat at the Melrose cafe by the train tracks, Anthony's *is* closed on Sun., so I found my way to Wakefield and tried Zalek's. It was fine but nothing has really sounded good while I'm sick so I just got a monte christo w/ fries ($5.95). I wondered about the lobster club or the steak tips, probably made the wrong choice. Not that there was anything wrong with it, fries were average, sandwich (1/2 of it) was fine, woman working was very nice. She also recommended the special baked oyster dinner that day. Cute little place, or maybe I should have gotten a roast beef sandwich. Whatever, I tried it but can't give a proper review since I wasn't hungry even tho I'd been up for 5 hrs. I grabbed a cone at Cravings old fashioned ice cream/spa type place on the main drag, a "kiddie" kahlua chip was very good sized and $1.95. I did see some of the other the famous Wakefield places on the main drag, Sushi Island and others.
