A friend has invited us to dinner in Irvine this Saturday. It's a nice gesture, but she doesn't have a track record of picking good restaurants. Any recommendations for me to suggest?

  1. These are the "foolproof" suggestions. Sam Woo's for Chinese and Taiko for Japanese. Now the bad news: Potential long waits at both. If Taiko is your choice get there at 4:30 and get in line for the door opening at 5p. Good Luck!

    1. If you're interested in authentic northern-Chinese style food (dumplings, noodle soup, etc.), try A&J located next to Taiko. Not the best for ambiance, but very, very good.

For Japanese, try Maizuru in the Gelsons shopping center (corner of Alton and Jeffrey). Great sushi (try the toro and tataki) and the lines aren't as insane as Taiko's.

I was just at Maizuru 3 weeks ago and it was not as good as it used to be. Taiko is much better, except for the line.
