Lunch near Tate Modern or Borough Market?

Having just awakened from a coma, it is only very recently that I learned (on this board) of the Borough Market, which is something I would have very much enjoyed visiting, had I known. Sadly, our upcoming visit to London has us leaving town on Thursday just as the market opens.

We will be visiting the Tate Modern on either Tuesday or Wednesday, though, and I am wondering if there are any places in the vicinity of the Market, ideally no more than 20 minutes walk from the Tate, which serve an interesting lunch and are open on non market days. In our home town, we also have a food market which is open only 3 days a week, but it is located in an area which also has permanent food stalls and restaurants which are open even on non-market days, and are worth a visit. Is this also the case with Borough Market, or is everything of interest really only there Thursday-Saturday?

Thanks for any help anyone can offer. I did do a search of the board but have a hard time figuring out if the many recommendations are for places only open on market days; it looks to me like that is what most/all of them are.

    1. I think The Table might be a good lunch spot for you - it's very near the Tate, great food, cool and varied menu: http://www.timeout.com/london/restaurants/reviews/10780.html
Some of the stalls in Borough will probably be open, as places like Monmouth Coffee, Neals Yard Dairy, Brindisa etc have proper shops that are open throughout the week. Other good choices in Borough include Fusebox (http://www.fuseboxfoods.com/index.html) which is mostly oriental, Brindisa or Tas (there's one next to the Globe on the South Bank, and one on Borough High Street). HTH!

        1. During my last visit to the Tate Modern we had a really nice meal at the Tate. It was not cheap at all, but the food was delicious, and beautifully presented. The service was impeccable. I had the fish and chips with mushy peas. The mushy peas were amazing. I really liked them! My mother had something pork which made her happy while my daughter did a small steak with potatoes.

Chances are the meal was overpriced, but it was convenient, and the view is spectacular.

I had the Pig Sandwich and enjoyed it--and the gorgeous view--tremendously!

              • I can highly recommend Brindisi Tapas at the Market, but one must get there very early by 12 or so to get a table. The food was delicious. I've eaten at the downstairs Tate Modern restaurant, and we enjoyed that, too, as it was very convenient and the food is fine.

                  1. You could take the short walk across the Millennium Bridge to Northbank, a restaurant that makes a feature of West Country produce and dishes. Here are the thoughts of the elder Majumdar http://majbros.blogspot.com/2007/10/n...
