Birthday Dinner for husband - a voce or allen&delancey?
Here's the criteria for choosing a restaurant - good food (prefer italian), dark atmosphere, and a place that's kind of new. I thought of these 2 spots, which is better? He loves Babbo but of course it's booked. Any recs welcome, thanks!
We haven't been to Allen & Delancey yet, but from the photos I've seen, it would appear to better fit what you want in the way of atmospherics than A Voce, which we have been to. A Voce is a fairly big space with very modern decor (not a hint of fabric anywhere), and if memory serves (we were there last May), the lighting was not particularly dark. Also, I've talked many time before about the insanely high noise level which is why we've hesitated about going back. Of course, I have no idea if that would be a problem at A&D.
With regard to the food, looking atA&D's menu on their website, it's definitely not Italian. I'd call it contemporary American. So, if your husband really wants Italian, A Voce would be the better choice.
Perhaps you might consider going to an Italian restaurant which is not new, but is new to *you*.
The space in A&D is warm and unpretentious. A lot of wood. There are two rooms. My wife and I sat in the front near the "wine cellar". It was quite nice. The place is not loud so I hope you enjoy conversing.
I also like the bar area... get there early enough and you can get to sit in the nice cozy alcove.
We BYO wine but took a look at the wine list. Very accessible and good price point.
I agree with RGR.... if your husband really wants Italian, go to A Voce or hit up another Italian joint.
