Might anyone grace me with a suggestion as to where to take a sheltered 13 year old for dinner? I'd love something different - (as in no Red Robin!), but not somewhere that would make her uncomfortable. Many, many thanks.

Yes, it would help to know the area. When my son was 13 or 14 we took him to Tony Roma's at Universal Citywalk and they enjoyed walking around afterwards and playing videogames at the arcade/bar thing there.
Last year we took him to Gaucho's Village in Glendale which was fun because they have dancers and such, but also because he's a big meat eater.
When I was that age I loved the Japanese bbq places like Gyu-Kaku which has a few locations in Pasadena, Beverly Hills and more.

It really would help to know an area, budget, and her favorite foods. Also, what do you mean by "sheltered"? Is sushi out? Is she frightened by strangers? Is she constantly walking around under some sort of canopy? (Sorry bad joke)

For 13, she wil want a more mature dinner, but still want a little bit of the princess treatment.

I reccomend a nice Italian place, like Caffe Angeli-they're good with kids of all ages (even this "kid" writing this!). She may enjoy thenhip factor of Mozza pizzaria, if you can get in.

You may want to treat her to a fancy schmancy French meal on the patio at Chez Mimi. Pretty, cute and some easy going food options.

Inn of the Seventh Ray will offer stuff she would like in a LOVELY atmosphere

Hey, how about pancakes for DINNER! Take herr to the Griddle for MASSIVE pancakes and fun.

If she can handle middle easatern food, such as hummus, lamb or fish, cous cous and such, she would adore going to Moun of Tunis with some friends. Lounging on couches, eating with your hands, in a place that looks like a moroccan bazaar with bellydancers!

A similar tactile option would be Ehtiopian food. Everyone tears off pieces of yummy injera and scoops up fabulous stews of meat and or veggies. Delicious and FUN! I like MEssobor Rahel, but Rosalinde's is definitely an option (All are on Fairfax Blvd south ofnthe miracle mile.

ok, so no red robin but maybe a cool burger joint like lucky devils in hollywood would appeal to a 13 year old.

Lucky Devil's is OK..sort of an awesome diner with good burgers, salads, fries, shakes, desserts, beer (for the grown ups) and such. Very hip!

What about a Greek Feast? Pappa Christo's is in a "scary" part of town, but both the Great Greek in Sherman oaks and Alexis Greek Cafe in Northridge do Greek feast menus. I don't know if Taverna Tony in malibu does, but I suspect they do.

Do you fant fancy, fun, hollywood hip or what for this lucky birthday gal? She might like the vibe at Comme Ca.

A good burger joint would be The Counter in Santa Monica on Ocean Park - you can custom order your burger. The burgers are good, the atmosphere is casual; it would be good for a bunch of pre-teens.

i'm a fan of the counter, but i wouldn't take a bunch of kids there anywhere near a normal meal-time;
the kitchen often gets completely backed up, and there is often a long wait for a table.

I second the suggestion of Universal Citywalk. Kids that age usually really like it. And she could pick a place. Or Micellis italian is right there off the 101 at Lankershim. I think that would be good for a kid that age. They usually like Italian food, don't they?
