La Campania or Il Cappriccio
Going out w friends next week in Waltham. None of us have ever been to either of these restaurants. Which one should we pick?
I don't think you can go wrong with either spot, though if forced to choose I'd likely opt for Il Capriccio. I've seen some opinions to the contrary here on the subject, though.
I loved Il Capriccio once, and still think its sommelier is extraordinary, but it kind of let me down last time I visited. The menu and the room looked kind of tired.
I thought La Campania had completely lapped it, had some superb meals there last year, but have not been back since its chef decamped for Da Vinci in town, nor seen any reports on it.
I've been to Da Vinci, and the menu is very similar to La Campania's, in a slightly swankier setting. I'd call it wonderful, but the wine list seems very top-heavy to me, and the bartending is abysmal.
I have not been to La Campania yet, but Il Capriccio has not let me down yet. And I will be there next week for a special wine maker dinner.
You can't go wrong with Campania. Food is fantastic and it's not as stuffy as Cappriccio. Enjoy!
