And I've seen Giffords by the pint at the Falls Church Whole Foods. My local Whole Foods didn't carry seven or eight flavors -- only three if memory serves. However, one of those flavors was Gifford's signature Swiss Chocolate so I was happily transported back to my youth and happy memories of the Silver Spring Giffords.
In addition, I noticed my local Whole Foods carrying pints by Moorenko, an ice-cream cafe located in McLean and one other location. (Silver Spring?) The Moorenko chocolate at Whole Foods was at the opposite end of the chocolate spectrum from Gifford's Swiss Chocolate. It was called "Red Hot Chocolate" -- a dark chocolate mixed with cayenne pepper. Fabulous! Definitely a chocolate for my adult tastes!

re: Dakota Guy
Assuming the moderators allow me to drift ever so slightly, I'd like to add a warning about Whole Foods' and pull dates generally. Caveat emptor. My recent pre-Super Bowl shopping for tortilla chips turned up a bag of Green Mountain chips that had a December 2006 pull date on it. (Yes, 2006. That's not a typo.)

Be careful with the dates on the prepared foods at Whole Foods too.
But buy Moorenko's ice cream whereever you find it. It's really good. Yes, their other shop is in Silver Spring next to the Mayorga coffee place on Georgia ave. Their bittersweet chocolate is my favorite but they have a lot of other interesting flavors.

re: wombat
Unfortunately I didn't have a similar experience with the Moorenko's ice cream I purchased from Whole Foods. I bought the Pumpkin ice cream and I was really disappointed. It wasn't creamy and smooth...it was actually more icey and the texture was odd.
On the other hand...I love the Gifford's coffee ice cream with chocolate chips (which are actually more like chocolate shavings!). Very yummy! I'm also a fan of the Whole Foods brand 'Whole Treats', the Triple Swirl is pretty good!

It's fairly new at Harris Teeter, but Magruder's has carried it for quite some time. But you know what they say about nostalgia - it isn't what it used to be. The current Gifford's isn't the same as what I remember in the Gifford's shops, but that's at least a 20 year old memory.
