Max and David's, Elkins Park, PA

Our 10th anniversary treat for our daughter and son-in-law was a hit all around. Gracious service; lovely decor, hard-to-choose from menu. I have to say this is the best upscale Kosher food I have eaten, including some lovely places in N. Y . C. The appetizers were unbelievable. Hubby and I shared the homemade chopped chicken liver with caramilezed onions, ($6.75) and Turkish mini Lamb Meatballs with Pomegranage & Pine Nuts ($8) OUr daugher so enjoyed her duck Confit with Kumquat Marmalade ($12) that she let her main dish grow cold while she polished off every crumb.

My main dish of Pan Seared Bronzino with Romanesco Sauce ($24) came with wonderful roast vegetables and apricot almond rice--it was excellent. Our son-in-law relished his choice--Steak Frites with M& D mixed fries ($23,50), medium rare just as he wished. My hubby was so full after his additional soup appetizer ($5)--spicy Southwestern Chicken Soup that he only ordered veggie side dishes for his main--chard, yukon gold mashed, and Moroccan carrot confit. I got tastes, and enjoyed each of them.

Desserts and coffee just fine, but we were pretty full after the meal, and only shared a couple of them. Relatively small place that does not take reservations--I would suggest coming early on a weeknight to be sure of getting a table. It was pretty full by 5:30. Oddly enough, we met close friends of ours from Elkins Park, and our daughter met a work-colleague from Philly who was there with her family. Our friend told us they had come the day before, early, on Sunday, and could not get in--there was a mob outside the door. So, be warned: this place is great. 8120 Old York Road, 215-885-2400. Use your GPS, it's a tad hard to find, tucked in a small shopping plaza.

After years of putting up with the limited choices in kosher food in Philly (I am very tired of vegetarian Chinese), I am happy to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the experience eating there. We arrived at 6:30 on a Monday and it was already full with a relatively long wait. Once we were seated however, the service was friendly. Better food and more reasonably priced than any of the fancy NYC places. The portions were generous, so alas we missed the nice looking desserts. The duck entree was particularly good. The Texas beef brisket was innovative if not quite traditional. I will be back.

Ditto to all the positive comments above. After reading many nice reviews, and checking out the menu online, we went out of our way to stop here last night on our return trip to NY from D.C.
You can see that they try really hard to please. Attractive Place. Excellent and very pleasant service, and very good food. And yes, the GPS came in handy.

Wow! I thought this place was great! The service was great, very friendly and the food was excellent! We tried all the desserts except the Key Lime pie, which was sold out, and enjoyed them all. We also had the Southwest soup, skirt steak, roast chicken, and lamb tagine, which was surprisingly not sweet. All were fabulous. I think it's better than any place in NY. And the price could not be beat! I definitely recommend reservations, although when a bunch of us were waiting, the owner brought out several plates of appetizers gratis, which I thought was very very nice!

Now that is a high compliment indeed! Better than any place in N. Y.!! We Philadelphians appreciate comments like that. I'm looking forward to going back.
