Very special birthday dinner on a Monday
My dad is turning 60, which is a big deal in our culture (Korean). So I'm looking for a restaurant for the occasion. We want it to be memorable. For reasons beyond my control, the dinner has to be on a Monday. There will be 8 people. One of them is a 4-year old. She's usually well-behaved at restaurants, but you never know when it comes to kids. We live and work in the Pasadena/Koreatown area, so we don't want to travel too far. We're open to most cuisines, though my dad's not a huge fan of Indian or Mexican food. No Korean please.
My first choice would be the tasting menu at Sona (we all like it), but it's closed on Mondays.
Here's a list I've compiled so far: Campanile, Craft, Cut, Hatfield's, Jar, Jiraffe, Lucques, Providence, Spago, Urasawa, Water Grill.
Of this list, Spago and Urasawa sound the best to me, but I'm worried that they won't be happy about a 4-year old. I've had the tasting menu at Providence and wasn't overly thrilled. Jar, Lucques and Water Grill are okay, but I wonder if it's special enough for the occasion. I haven't been to the rest. By the way, I tried making reservations at Cut, but their only reservations that day are 5:30 (too early) or 9 (too late).
These other places aren't open on Mondays: Bastide, Capo, Grace, Josie, Langham Dining Room (formerly Ritz Pasadena), Melisse, Sona, Saddle Peak Lodge.
So what do you think? Any help would be so appreciated! Thanks.
If you could secure a private dining room all to yourselves, then the 4 year old wouldn't bother anybody and it makes the evening more special. Not on your list, but Osteria Mozza's private room might work for you, is open on Mondays, and isn't that far away:
My 3 and 5 year old love Spago.
Urasawa may not work for kids.
Providence was good for the kids.
My 4 year old was fine at Osteria Mozza and they were perfectly nice to us. It's kind of noisy (although not overly) - so even if they make some noise they will not be disturbing anyone. Spago is also absolutely fine with kids! They have lots of appropriate food choices.
