La Tropezienne - Delicious Pastries in Spanish Harlem

I just came across this little gem today - a great neighborhood find on 1st ave between 109th & 110th streets. The shop is bright and clean. A sign on the wall says everything is baked on the premises. I had a delicious cheesecake (which is saying something because I am very finicky when it comes to cheeksecake - I don't usually like it) and a delicious tiny cream puff. The largeish almond croissant was good, in fact better than most around town, but nothing to go out of your way for (it was just some ?phyllo folded a few times, filled with almond paste, and covered with almond slivers and powdered sugar). The display cases were filled with lots of other little treats like brightly-colored cookies shaped like flowers and animals and small fruit tarts. Behind one of the counters were bins of various types of bread, and one customer was picking up a cake for a party.

It's not Payard's or Financier, but it's a wonderful place nonetheless.

  1. Thanks for posting that; I have wondered about this place for years and now have a reason to stop. Has anyone tried their breads?

    1. Thanks for the report. The other place I've always wondered about in the area is Morrone's bakery. It's always closed when I go by it--has anyone sampled their wares?

I think they're just bread, which makes me think they're not related to the fantastic pastry places of the Bronx.

I have purchased their prosciutto bread. It was a great old New York place. However:

Oh dear! Well that explains why they're always closed when I pass. Sorry I missed the chance to go there.

      2. There's also a small bakeshop that seems to be pretty new on, I think, 109th between Lexington & 3rd (or 3rd & 2nd). They sell things like slices of strawberry shortcake and other layer cakes. Has anyone eaten anything from them?
