People rave about this place, but I just don't see why. Service is impeccable and the menu has some unusual items, but i find the food to be really bland. I've been 2-3 times in the past 2 years and gotten different orders each time and not really cared for it at all. Not that I can recommend any other chinese in the area, tho...

Yeah, it's hard to understand, with the asian community in DE and being so close to Philly, which has numerous, excellent chinese restaurants, that we don't really have any consistently good ones here.

I'd agree with your assessment of China Royal. Unfortunately it mirrors the Delaware vs. Philly dining scene, as with few exceptions there is not much of a comparison.

I have the same opinion. I used to work not far from there, and one of the Chinese guys who worked in my office would go there all the time for lunch and say that it was the best place around--and he wasn't eating from any secret Chinese menu, either, just the regular lunch specials. I found it completely underwhelming--very run-of-the-mill, Westernized food.

Shang Hai is still the only Chinese place I would bother with in the Wilmington area. My Chinese colleague who introduced me to Bon House says that even they have gone downhill.
