So many great places to go in Bethesda/Chevy Chase! Lucky you are so close. The first one that came to mind when I read your original post was the Mongolian Grill. Fun, casual atmosphere, good food and not expensive. The set up of having to choose your items helps the conversation get started. Good Luck!

Anna Maria's in dupont has wonderful red sauce italian, good prices, and a nice but not fussy atmosphere.

A few places to consider: Sette Osteria, Firefly, Hank's Oyster Bar, Tabard Inn, Mark and Orlandos, and Hudson--all in Dupont Circle.
