The secret world of streetfood

There is a thriving business in certain parts of LA that only few know about. I am talking about mexican food operations, mostly tacos, that appear in certain locations in the evening and go late into the night. These places typically park in a lot of some kind when the day business is closed. They are not a typical catering truck/ roach coach per se (although they can be), but are usually a kitchen of some kind that is hauled to the place. These range from the extensive glass enclosed ones to the rinky-dink grill with one burner. All of them turn out extremely fresh tacos and the like as they only prepare what is needed and the turnaround of food is rather fast. They remind me of street food found in locations from thailand to mexico (obviously) that is fresh and tastes great.

Two of my favorites are:

-Hugos' Tacos-off the 60 freeway in east LA..take the 60 to the downey rd exit, make a left and then a quick right on the first stoplight..i believe it is 3rd st...it is half a block on your right hand side in a parking lot..it has a neon sign that says hugos..they start about 7pm or so... and their specialty is carne asada tacos, although they also have al pastor, lengua, and others..ask for cebollitas, which are grilled onions..they are free but ya gotta ask!the tacos come with onion and cilantro and salsa..they will ask you what you want them with..there is a condiment area outside with lemons and radishes...help yourself..and they are 90 cents each

-El Korita-Olympic and Herbert Ave on the northeast corner in East LA..in the lot of a small market where you can purchase soft drinks...the great thing here is that they make the corn tortillas as you order!!!..order a MULA..which is kind of like a quesadilla using corn tortillas with the meat of your choice..the al pastor and carne asada is good but i also like the cabeza, which is basically broiled head meat from le cow...there is a green guacamole salsa here that is tasty.

These are just two of the good ones..anyone know of any others other than the standards..el taurino, el paian, yucas, ciros/el tepeyac on evergreen...???

enjoy
