Watch the Game near MGH?

Forgive me, this is not necessarily a food-related question.

My friend's father has been very ill at MGH for almost two weeks, and my buddy has been staying with him almost the whole time.

Tonight, to interject a little normalcy into his life, we decided to head to a bar close to MGH to catch the Celtics game at 10:30.

The place I was thinking of - Foster's in the Holiday Inn - closes at 10.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a place to catch the late game where the atmosphere is not too rowdy walking distance from MGH?

Any help would be appreciated.

I would say in Beacon Hill Harvard Gardens wouldn't be a bad choice. There is also a cool bar in the bottom level of the Liberty Hotel called Alibi which I am not sure of tvs but it is a cool spot for a drink. I also like the 7s pub in Beacon Hill too. Anywhere BUT the Beacon Hill Pub !

I've heard Alibi has had lines out the door on weekends so this might not meet the not too rowdy requirement.

I would agree about Harvard Gardens...it's close by and the food and drink are both good (great comfort food).

Alibi does not have TVs I don't think. I would definitely go for the 7's on Charles St. Good dive-bar type atmosphere in there and they have a nice plasma above the bar.

Agree with HG , 7's if he likes a great beer. Add the Red Hat up the Hill and the **** halfway up Cambridge St.

thank to all for quick responses. 7s looks like it might work.

i'm so unfamiliar with that area. i'll check up on all the recommendations too. thanks!

I like the 7's a lot..also the Hill Tavern would work. They used to have a pretty good burger but I haven't had it recently.

and perfectly decent sweet potato fries!

that said, it can get crowded there on a Friday night.

Its been a few months for me (Sox playoffs), but their burger was still tasty back when I last had one :)

You might also consider all the bars near The Garden, which is a very short walk away from MGH. The Fours, Sullys, The Greatest Bar, Boston Beer Works, Grand Canal...

The 7's is a good idea, as is The Red Hat and Harvard Gardens. The Hill can be a bit of a pick-up joint (one that's occasionally successful, but that's another topic for a different board).

As for the Beacon Hill Pub...uh, it's okay if you grab lunch at Villa Mexico and have a few beers at the bar, but I'd stay away anytime after 7:00.

8pm on the BHP isn't nearly as sketchy as it is in the late afternoon. OTOH, I'm sure that young-mid 20 somethings getting drunk and hitting on each other is not really the scene that he's after. :) Its fun and all, but not quite a quiet place to catch a sporting event (and at least the last time I was there, they only had one small TV anyways)

Working at MGH, I come across this issue from time to time (although more regularly its a 'daytime sox game' so the situation is slightly different).

Personally, I'd go to the Hill. Its right across the street from the Holiday Inn (cambridge st side, not blossom st side). I like their food there, its a good atmosphere and you can always watch the sports games.

Definitely The Hill (I work there too). There's a recent thread on lunch near MGH that could give you and your friend other eating ideas. Good luck with everything- hope it all works out.

Harvard Gardens at 10:30 on a Friday night will definitely not fall into the "not too rowdy" category. The Hill Tavern should be a little calmer, but perhaps not much. More TVs in there anyway.

                      7s is also good.

The Beacon Hill Tavern on Cambridge Street across from Foster's has TVs and very good burgers.
