Buggy Whip Stone Crabs. Had 'em?
Anyone had the stone Crabs from Joes at the Buggy Whip in Westchester? Are they always available in crab season (Oct-May?) Are they good? Cost? Other thoughts? Thanks!
I hve friends who go there all the time for the stone crab claws. Call and find out if they are serving them. My friends who I consider most knowledgeable about food say they are the best in So. California. Further the Bugg Whip is an absolute blast from the past. In 1997 when I went there I spoke with one of the waitresses about the time she served Mickey Cohen dinner.
I have posted about my love of the Buggy Whip a few times-from the Naugahyde booths, the bar regulars (we are talking 30 years or more on same stool until they die) to Peter the Singing Sensation-it is all interesting to me. I don't eat red meat, so for me-the stone crab claws and oysters are the draw. I love the crabs-they usually have 2, sometimes 3 sizes. I like to get the middle size (Jumbo?) as the meat seems more tender to me. They had them in January and I think they were priced at 45 bucks for six (I don't really remember as I tend to block the expense part out).
Please check it out and report back!
