New Hog Island Deli location at 4th and Lavaca

So after a jog on the trail tonight, I headed back to my office downtown and walked by the Lavaca Street Bar and noticed a sign up - "Hog Island Deli Coming Soon". There is a small unoccupied retail space right next to Lavaca Street Bar that I'd never noticed.

Could it be true? Finally a decent sandwich shop to walk to during the workday.

I wonder if they would be open at night to cater to the drunken 4th street crowd? A philly cheese or italian after a few pints at Fado's? mmmm......

  1. LakeLBJ, if you ever jog by their original location at 1612 Lavaca, would you check to see if there's a sign up saying that they're moving? I'm hoping that they're just adding a second location at 4th Street.

I don't get up that way very often, that's why I'm glad we're getting a 4th street location. Of course, I hope they're not closing down the 1612 Lavaca spot. I'm going to see if the better half wants to go there for lunch on Saturday and I'll ask them.

I wish that they'd hurry up and get the new 183 location open WTFUN. I eat lunch out here every day!

They're opening one up on 183?! Where?

          1. re: amysuehere

There's a sign up saying it's coming late 2007 just south of Main Event. Doesn't look like anything is happening there though, but we can remain hopeful.

I emailed Carlo about the NW location back in Jan 2008. Below is his reply.

Finishing development issues with building the strip center, and then we are trying to open for 4th qtr. 2008.. I will put you in our database to send emails, we are opening at 407 Lavaca Street next to Lavaca Street Bar in March '08!!!!

              Best regards,
              Carlo DiMarco

Thanks for the info! I drive by this sign everyday and wish it would come true. Also listed are Freebirds, Zen, Amy's Ice Cream and...I'm blanking on the 5th place.

      2. Well, the mystery got the better of me, so a co-worker and I just checked on this information. The new location on Lavaca at 4th Street should open at the end of March or early April. The original location at 1612 Lavaca will remain open as well. No information on the 183 location.

Looks like we will be spoiled with multiple outposts of HI soon. More cheesesteaks for everyone! Thanks for sharing the good news, LakeLBJ.

This is phenomenal news! 4th and Lavaca is very walkable distance for me for lunch. I'd better go buy some bigger pants.

        2. Oh. Hell. Yes.

Their cheese steaks are amazing and now this new location will be walking distance from work for me. I can't wait!

I've tried their pasta and wasn't impressed, but it doesn't really matter because they could only sell cheese steaks and still do great.

I hope that they expand and have new spots all throughout Austin!

          1. Good news, folks! This location is now open! I'm chowing down on a cheesesteak as we speak. In case you haven't been by there yet, it's just window service, so either call in your order and take it back to the office or you'll have to just wait there on the sidewalk until your sandwich is made.

They also have a late night menu posted on the building for the drunky munchies. Looks like they do pizza, fries and about 4 different hoagies.

            1. FYI to all you downtown-at-lunchtime CH'ers - The Lavaca Street Bar is now open during lunch to accommodate Hog Island fans who would rather eat there than take it back to the office.

i wish the north location would happen soon for us almost-suburbanites!

I don't think that it is happening - all signs of "Austinville" are now gone, including the Zen truck that was defiantly parked there. I guess the drainage issue, plus the economy, killed the plans. I'll point out that I don't know that for sure - I'm simply speculating.

                  1. re: rudeboy

                    the zen truck is gone?
okay, if i saw that, i would think the same thing as you.
                    that's certainly a "sign".

                    1. re: rudeboy

According to today's Statesman, "Austinville" (shudder) is still on for this fall. And it includes the Hog Island!

This is great news for cheesesteak lovers in N Austin!
