Formal French in the vein of L'orangerie?

Need formal restaurant for boss' parents.........nice ambience (a bit stuffy is fine), great food a must. Bastide is probably too experimental- think old school and not a place where hipsters go for cockatils. Doesn't necessarily have to be French, although that's the first choice.

Thanks!

Melisse is a great idea. Also, how about Michael's in Santa Monica? Not French, but great food, elegant presentations, beautiful patio. Expensive, but I'm assuming $$ isn't an issue in this case.

I just had an ugly experience at Ortolan. Food was great but the service was AWFUL. Also- they played rock music (aka Dido, The Cure, and some classic rock) which I thought was weird.

The ex-chef of L'orangerie has his own place now called Ortolan:

Although, I agree that Meliesse is great!

              Melisse over La Cachette.

Mr. No Peanuts and I had a monumentally disappointing meal at La Cachette last Friday. This was our first visit. Decor is awful - all yellows and small floral prints. The other patrons were too close, too loud and on cel phones (x2). Food was nearly flavorless; service strange and rushed, wine blech. And it was quite expensive. Truly a waste in every sense.

What area of town do you prefer? Have you considered Josie?
