Best bacon in Manhattan?

Produce Addict Feb 19, 2008 11:10 AM

I thought it would be fun to do a make-your-own bacon of the month club, where I just assembled a list of the hounds's favorite bacons in the City, and I'd purchase one every month or so for my husband. Not looking for restaurant options, just retail establishments that sell great bacon. Thanks!

I've not done a wide survey of bacon options, myself, but I do get very good bacon from Ottomanelli's on Bleecker, near 7th Avenue South.

I buy their slab bacon from Citarella - very nice.

Fairway also carries S&W's double smoked bacon, although recently I've been buying Nueske's (sp?) there.

I *think* the one I get is called Black Forest bacon - not sure if it's double smoked or not.

I'm not sure how much of S&W's line they carry; we needed some slab cut double smoked for a recipe (great smoky flavor, BTW), and I got it there. The Nueske's (applewood smoked from Wisconsin) is packaged and carried in the cold room; it's pricy but really terrific bacon.

That Nueske's sounds wonderful - these days I seem to have several bacons in the fridge, including applewood smoked, so I'll have to try that brand.

I don't recall seeing the Nueske's at Fairway, but they often have the Nieman Ranch applewood smoked bacon and I'm a big fan.

I second the Nieman Ranch smoked bacon (which i bought at Whole Foods!)

The bacon from Flying Pigs Farm is also extremely delicious! You can get them at Union Square Farmer's market

My favorite bacon has to be the Benton's bacon that Momofuku uses. However, I don't think they sell it in retails and is only available online (which I have done and was very satisfied!!)

there is another vendor in USQ. they don't have a marquee so i cannot recall the farm's name. however they have a bunch of giant white coolers and a cardboard and black marker sign that says "seriously good bacon". their bacon is seriously good. sometimes they offer a nitrate-free version. they are usually on the west side of the market.

That's Violet Hill. I agree that they and Flying Pigs both have amazing bacon. Both are at Union Sq on Saturdays.

Second on Violet Hill and Flying Pigs. Ottomanelli's double smoked on Bleecker is also great as is Nodine's Applewood smoked which is available at Dean & DeLuca or Citarella's.

A friend of mine has discovered that Whole Foods does good bacon. They smoke it themselves.

Eli's 1411 Third Avenue (between 80th and 81st Streets) has whole slabs of bacon. They also carry bacon made by a company in VA, I think.

for restaurant bacon the peter lugars (and clone/spinoffs) all seem to have similar, excellent, overpriced bacon.

Do they sell it "to go"?

Gramercy Meat Market currently has a Danish bacon that is excellent.

Second avenue, between twenty-second and twenty-third.

A block worth visiting, as it features the excellent Gramercy Fish Co. and a branch of Bruno Ravioli (inexpensive fresh pasta, imported goods, and OK Italian sandwiches).

The smoked bacon at the Hungarian meat market on 2nd Ave is fantastic - even better than Schaller's.
