Close to Brava Theater in Mission?

  • 9

Can anyone recommend some good midpriced restaurants close to the Brava Theater at 24th and York in the Mission.

We have people BARTing from all directions to 24th and Mission.

All kinds of food welcome!

My family was "encanta" with Delfin when we went, then it seemed to be closed for awhile. Have not risked trying it again. It had been reviewed in the Bay Guardian, I believe (a free weekly SF paper) years ago. Has anyone been there more recently. Their seafood was spicy and yummy.

La Santaneca is good if somewhat greasy for pupusas. La taqueria is infamous and worth the price/still cheap and no rice burritos. Always fresh, and you can go across the street to Mission Pie for dessert. La Taqueria is at 25th and Mission and it is telling that there is always a line and Latinos and Gueros (White people) gravitate to it. The tacos are also excellent. You can get weird stuff like lengua...tongue, cabeza...brain, carne asada and polla...steak and chicken. The vegetarian burritos and tacos are also yummy...use the green salsa. There is also Weird Fish, eighteenth and mission, and Spork is open for lunch Tues. thru Fri., though I have not tried it...it is too meaty for me.

      2. I'm not sure of your definition of "midpriced," but Foreign Cinema qualifies in my mind. Plus, the food is better than "good." It's great. You can't beat the overall experience in that immediate area, in my opinion. Foreign Cinema is around 22nd and Mission.

        1. Roosevelt Tamale Parlor and St. Francis Fountain are right there. SFF will probably be crowded. Roosevelt is a subjective call, I like it however.

Roosevelt has had some fairly dramatic ups and downs. Anybody eaten there recently?

Yes, I've been twice in the past year. I really like it. But I usually always get their classic "famous" (round) beef tamales smothered in their house-made gravy. Those are consistently excellent. Also, my friends and I thought their guacamole was very fresh and very good last time, too.

if you are a fan of very traditional tacos, i'd recommend Vallarta taqueria on 24th nearby. i've only had tthe tacos, which i love, but my Mexican friends also say that the tamales (apparently sold from a slightly separate stall in the restaurant?) are also excellent and very traditional. btw, these are greasy, yummy, non-papalote tacos, prepared on the traditional round, sloped grills you see all over Mexico.

i am a huge taco fan, but i have a favorite place already -- la taqueria (on mission at 25th). i prefer la taqueria to vallarta, but i agree that vallarta's are also good.
