KC Area- Cajun/Creole Food?

I recently moved back here after 4 years (and one hurricane) in Nola. I have been CRAVING gumbo, etouffe, and shrimp creole. I could make these things, but slaving over a roux for 30 minutes is kind of a pain. Anyone know where to get any of this? I've heard of Boudreaux's, but I'm hesitant to try louisiana food outside of LA until a foodie gives me the go ahead!

My vote is for Jazz, either location. I usually go for the crawfish etouffee, husband goes for the bbq shrimp. Love the jambalaya.

I also wouldnt know "authentic" cajun if it slapped me in the face, but i DO know good food and I have eaten at the Louisianna Jazz Kitchen at the Legends and I thought it was very very good. I know some people slam it, but hey, theres no accounting for taste! I had the onion rings, (battered, and DELICIOUS...i still dream of these....) hushpuppies (good crust, sweet, gritty cornmeal) and shrimp poboy. The shrimp were battered and nicely sized...it really was a satisfying meal. My friend had the gumbo and it did pack quite bit of heat if I remember correctly. I remember I wasnt too impressed with the rice (I rarely am in restaurants unless its chinese) which comes scooped into the gumbo. But like I said, maybe rice is supposed to be the non, sweet, not sticky long grain variety in NOLA...i wouldnt really know.

They do have good happy hour deals M-Thur when a majority of their apps are $2.99...its a great deal! On I think Monday, any poboy is like $6-7...its a good deal. They have several types, catfish, oyster, shrimp, chicken...check out their website.

And another really surprising find....the Ameristar casino Horizon's Buffet has a very decent, attractive spread. Your not going too find gumbo or blackened catfish, but on Seafood and steak nights, (19.99 ? pp) they have boiled crawfish. Spicy for sure...my lips were burning (in a good way). They have a whole bunch of different "stations" (Southern, Italian, Chinese, Mexican) The salmon there is excellent (surprising)...it was moist and thick perfectly cooked really. not your typical dried out and chewy. A guy from chicago was with us and he is the epitome of food snob...its embarrasing to go out anywhere with him because hes such a jerk to waitstaff and about food in general, but he was raving over their prime rib....shocker. Try the creamed spinch, its addictive.

Yeah, check the Ameristar website...I have onbly gone on prime rib and seafood night and thats when its there. the buffet is pretty decent. of course there are your winners and losers on the bar, but overall I really enjoyed it. Pick a few things and then go back for those things that are good. There are usually several different preperations of shrimp, salmon, carved prime rib (they can carve to your deired doneness)...i really like the southern or "homestyle" (i forgot what they call it) part of the buffet. Mexican has never been too exciting (but the chicken fajita mix is decent) nor has italian (its kinda gloppy) but like i said, i still enjoy it all. I have never really been impressed with the desert bar at all, but by then I'm really too full anyway.
