Taco Tour

Yesterday I tried tacos at two Bladensburg Taquerias. The best were at Taqueria La Placita on Edmonston. We had the Pastor and Carnitas. The Carnitas were a bit bland, but the Pastor were awesome. They are cooked with pineapple on the rotisserie. The also had nopalitos and various tacos that either I hadn't heard of or new what they were but am not adventurous enough to try. They had ear, belly and tripe tacos. They also had barbecued lamb tacos which I didn't see on the wall menu but did see on the printed menu after we ordered. The salsas were good. They didn't seem to have any fresh agua frescas, only bottled.

Taqueria Tres Reyes II was also good, but not as good as Las Placitas, especially the Pastor. However, they have better salsa and home made agua frescas.

There are two other taquerias that I haven't tried on Edmonston (Taco Rico and La Azteca). There was also a taco truck in someone's front yard, but they had only one customer.

In front of La Placita, there was a van selling roasted corn out the back. I didn't try it, though it looked good, because we were searching for tacos only.

If you want authentic Mexican tacos, go to Bladensburg. They are cooking for a Mexican audience. You may need to know a little Spanish to order, but it is worth it.

El Tapatio has always been my favorite, but I've not tried La Placita. I'll have to add it to my list.

La Placita basically just has tacos and a couple of side dishes. The only vegetarian item are the nopalitos.

I agree with Jason - my two favorites are El Tapatio and La Sirenita. Would be curious as to how they stack up with La Placita, which I haven't made it to.

I love El Tapatio and didn't like La Sirenata that much. At Tapatio I usually order the mole' and sometimes the tacos. The tacos are pretty good. These other places are different kinds of places. La Placita basically just serves tacos. Tres Reyes II has tacos, torta, cemitas, quesadillas and huaraches, and seafood soups. They really are a different kind of restaurant than Tapatio. Tapatio has table service, they others have, basically, counter service. I'm from L.A. and can tell you that you can get good Mexican food in that area. These are not Margarita, chips and salsa, gloppy enchilada places. These places serve almost only Mexicans. You won't get any chips. Your tacos will come without cheese but with radishes. The salsas are not bland. One of the green salsas at Tres Reyes is wonderfully dangerous. Now if I could just find a place that has machaca. I'm too squeemish for oreja, buche' and tripa tacos.
