CARM'S CONEY'S NY's Finest Coney's & Franks in Costa Mesa---Anybody Been There?

I just saw an ad (that I attached below) for Carm's Coney's NY's Finest Coney's & Franks in Costa Mesa on the corner of Irvine Ave/17th St. (which is also where Al's NY Pizza Cafe is----this would be quite a duo of NY food gems since Al's serves up the best NY-style pizza that I know of in OC). I have never heard about this place and want to know if anyone has been there? The ad says that it serves Sabretts from NJ, Hofmanns from Syracuse, and Zweigles from Rochester. It also says that they serve gourmet burgers, great salads, homemade chili, beer, and more. This sounds too good to be true and I will have to get down there asap.

Probably the tastiest dogs around, I'd say. Their original white dog is very good. Each is made to order and condiments taste fresh and match the dogs. Even the rolls are fresh and good. I'd recommend them, obviously. Service is good but casual and prices aren't stratospheric. All in all clean, good lighting, comfortable seating. Obviously I like the place.

I tried The Original Coney made with all white Veal -- It's good and different tasting. I've attached a couple photos. I also write about it on Nibbles of Tidbits, a Food Blog.

We tried the red dog and the city dog and liked them both. Stay away from the greasy sweet fries.

Just came back from there thanks to this thread. :-)

Tasty dogs. Had one Coney (Hoffman's Veal) and one "City Dog" (Sabret). Those along with a bottle of Sam Adams was $12.50. Not too bad considering the brands are a little hard to find.

People were friendly and there are 4 flat screens to watch.

          I will be back.

          Tom

Yes, they have em all, and it's pretty tasty. Been a few times.
Not the same corner as Al's pizza, but by Los Prinos.

            No lines normally.

Found some more info. Earliest Yelp reviews seem to indicate that this placed opened this past December, and from this OC Register article last month, Carm's Coneys was around 20 years ago near the Newport pier.

              Interesting read:

I plan to go maybe tomorrow. Yelp reviews are reporting lines, but can't tell whether it's at lunch, dinner, or late night.

Just dropped by Carm's Coneys for lunch today. Very good stuff. No waiting at all, the parking lot was relatively easy to park in after remembering it being extremely crowded in past years. Carm's Coneys replaced a little Chinese restaurant called Chinese Deli.

The place has quite a few varieties of hot dogs, as HBFoodie mentions from the ad. I ordered the 1/4 lb.'er, which is the Hoffman's beef dog, and a side cup of the all-meat chili. Also ordered the 6-piece hot wings, which we got with bleu cheese dressing. All items were very good.

They also have Polish & Italian sausages, bratwursts, hamburgers, and some different sandwiches. They also have breakfast items like various omelets that are served from 9AM-11:30AM.

I'm no hot dog expert, so I don't know much or have preferences about things like snappy casings as you might read hot dog aficionados rave about, but I thought everything tasted great here.

There is also a huge condiment rack in the restaurant having 5 or 6 different types of mustards, a few different types of relish, and even a few different ketchups. There was even something called "hot dog sauce", which I'd never seen before, and appeared to be ketchup, mustard, relish, and some other stuff all mixed together and seemed to resemble salsa. I poured some on my hot dog, and it tasted great. :-)

For those like me who are relatively new to OC, I didn't know much of Carm's Coneys history, which is written on the back of their menu. The first restaurant existed from 1985 to 1991 close to the Newport pier.

I haven't tried any of the sausages yet and plan to on my next visit, but I thought the 1/4 lb'er was among the best dogs in OC. I haven't visited many of the hot dog institutions in LA (only been to Pink's and Cupids so far), so I can't do a fair comparison, but I thought the hot dog was better than Jerry's Dogs, Mustard's in Long Beach, and Portillo's.

Glad to have Carm's Coneys nearby, and I plan to add it to the regular lunch rotation and try out the other dogs and sausages in the near future.

Update: Carm's Coneys closed last week. Just got a confirmation, as their sign has already been taken down. So sad, as it had a nice variety of hot dogs to choose from.

Haven't heard of the place either. Hadn't seen that ad before either, but last time I drove by that area, it did look like one of the places was being remodeled and would have a new tenant.

The address appears to be on the same corner with the little outdoor strip mall where Los Primos Cantina and Ooiso are located. There is also a Golden Spoon is that same corner.

I'll try to check it out sometime this week.
