Tea Time in Charleston?

We'll be visiting Charleston for a few blissful days the first week of March and I was wondering if anyone could suggest a nice place for an Afternoon Tea.

Sadly we'll be car-free so I won't be able to go to the tea plantation.

  1. Charleston Place serves a lovely afternoon tea. They don't serve it on Sunday because of brunch but I'm prettty sure they serve it every other day. Right on the corner of Meeting and Market and the back faces King Street.

    1. That's exactly what I was going to suggest. They do tea in the open bar/restaurant area that is now, I believe, called the Thoroughbred Club or something of that nature. Any hotel employee can point you in the right direction and their afternoon tea is fabulous.

Thank you both. The pictures look lovely.

Very civilized! I think a bit pricey, but truly a great escape .. . You may want to make a reservation -- we walked in on a impulse one afternoon and couldn't get served. I think it has to do with how many of the scones etc. they prepare. A delightful mother-daughter bonding time a few weeks later, and an out of town guest was suitably impressed as well. The champagne and additional sandwich option was a good upgrade choice.

      2. Yes, Charleston Place is your best bet downtown for afternoon tea--nice scones, tea sandwiches, pastries, etc. and the tea is not bad either. Do be aware that they leave the leaves steeping in the pot, as is often the case with English-style tea, so your potta may become a tannic mess after awhile. Fortunately, it's usually not a problem to get a fresh pot (as oppposed to just having them "freshen" the pot, which results in a weak but still bitter tea).

Woodlands also does a nice afternoon tea in their beautiful Winter Garden space, but without a car, this would not be an option.
