Hey

Anyone know where one can get Black Currant juice in Alberta? Craving to make some Hot Balzams, but it needs BCJ.

Thanks

I found it again today at Superstore. It was down the pop aisle. Before the pop and by the Orangina, this was the NW country hills blvd/sarcess location

I know that Planet Organic and Real Canadian SS both sell juice by R.W Knudsen and they sell one called Just Black Current. I will be at superstore this afternoon and let you know if I see it there.

if i diluted it, it might. But when i asked the bartender, he said it wasnt syrup, but juice that was required. If Kayben doesnt work out, maybe i'll try it. But hopefully as a last resort only! :)

Isnt Planet Organic closed now? I know Sam Wok is closed, and they are going to close PO, but wasnt sure if it has happened yet.

I was referring to Edmonton (thus the Sam Wok reference). Anyway, my understanding is they are going to be closing. Just FYI.

what is Sam Wok? are both locations supposed to close? that would suck with organic roots just having closed too! there will be no organic store anymore.

Sam Wok was the Hong Kong style diner that shared the same complex (former Strathcona Chinatown Mall) as Planet Organic on the south side. I was told that it's only the south location that is closing - something about that building being demo'd and something new being built there. This is all second hand info, so you may want to verify yourself.

are you referring to the one by Doan's & save on foods at 7917 104th Street? i am surprised that they are demoing that building it seems very new to me. glad to hear the downtown location will stay open.

I should know by now to read the whole thread thru... not the Planet Organic in Calgary NW... *whew* :)

It's also available in a ready to drink format, I always see the 2l bottle catching my eye... I just dont remember where :( maybe it was the safeway specialty drink isle....

Also T&T asian supermarket always has some UK product and a massive drink isle, might be a place to check?

Edmonton - we used to serve it at a restaurant I worked at but not sure where we got it. Would call the euro grocery stores - K&K, the Italian centre, the big Polish grocery store downtown.

Kayben Farms makes a great black currant juice and they're based in Okotoks. I'm sure you can find some at a retailer near you. www.kayben.com/prairiefruit.html should give you some more info. By the way, what are Hot Balzams....?

+1 for Kayben. I love their jams and jellies, I am sure they must sell juice I know we have bought it there in the past.

Thank you for the fine detail - this should make it much easier to find. Whenever i asked for Black Currant juice, i got quite the vacant look.

As for Hot Balzams...ahhh :) It's a drink made from Riga Black Balsams, an herbal liqueur from Latvia. Hot Balzams is a variation i had in Riga over Xmas - they mixed Black Balzams with Black Currant juice and fresh fruit, served it hot. It cured the cold i'd had for 3 weeks within the day. Probably a placebo, but it's really tasty too, so it can't hurt :)
