Best Thai in St Pete ( or any eats in St Pete )
Thai is trickey, but here are some other options......
Check out DeSantos on 3d right downtown, It's new and the SPTimes panned it but we had a nice meal there and the service was way above par for StPete. If you can, eat outside and have the chicken !
The only consistent Thai is King and I on Central around 4th but it is always empty so feels a little strange. If you speak with the owner he will see that your meal is prepared especially - best to follow his suggestions.
If you want to go a little broader in the Asian category, try ABC Seafood on 54th at Haines Rd. It is a storefront in a strip center but when you go in there are tanks of fresh fish and seafood from which to choose. It is typically filled with large families, generally Chinese, having huge banquet style meals. The ribs are excellent as is the whole fish and shrimp with honey and walnuts.
There are also, O Bistro on Central, Ceviche downtown (tapas), lots of folks rave about Z Grille (fish tacos) Park Shore and Bella Brava but all are highly over-rated. Try Bella for happy hour - good mojitos and some tasty appetizer pizzas but skip dinner. Lunch at Fresco's on the water at the end of the pier can be hit or miss - just stick with the salads and enjoy the view.
Our consistent favorite is the Central Avenue Oyster Bar - great friendly service, fresh fish and wonderful hand-shucked oysters (on the half-shell or available baked several ways - ask for them slightly roasted but still moist with mignonette sauce even if it isn't on the menu) Just overlook the gradeschool looking scoop that is used to serve the mashed potatoes - they are garlicky and tasty. The grouper is always grouper (they buy it whole) and there are several specials each day. On Sun evenings there is a great old style "crooner" who performs - order a manhattan or martini from John, Jesse or Becky behind the bar and sit back and relax. Great single malt and bourbon selection as well.
I hear Tedesco's is good but haven't tried it. Hated Savannah's. Understand a Rattlefish "clone" is opening soon.
It depends on how you are defining "best" Some of the best places are the old stand-bys with local flavor. Let me know if you need info on those. The city is just starting to enjoy some "bests" of a higher caliber.
