Meyer lemon report

I am a meyer lemon fanatic - nothing like the fruit straight off the trees in Menlo Park. That said, I recently tried to capture some of that perfumy goodness here in NYC. Went to Otto for lunch specifically because I saw they had meyer lemon gelato.

Oh, it was so disappointing compared to the olive oil gelato. I have made much better at home, and there was this heavy meringue that overpowered the meek meyer lemon flavor. You could hardly tell it was meyer lemon versus normal lemon, and my tablemate actually asked the same thing!

Then my friend brought me back some meyer lemons in a clamshell box from Fairway - these were also anemic - no smiles came to me, no familiar and hedonistic waft of sunshine.

Went to Philly and dropped by the Rittenhouse Capogiro, home of the best gelato in the USA, and lo and behold they had some intensely flavored meyer lemon gelato with Grey Goose vodka. Oh lordy, rich, scented, intense, packs a pow! Almost as good as the meyer lemon icemilk I made with fresh off the trees lemons, and assuredly better than the last batch of Fairway meyer lemon icemilk.

Then I wandered over to Fairway myself today and found that they have loose meyer lemons on sale, which had slightly more scent. I stuck my ice cream machine freezer bowl in today so we'll see if this round tastes like real meyer. The loose meyers are about 2.89 per pound or so versus the 4.99 for 2lbs in a box, but I would rather pay more for more real scent and flavor versus essentially plastic ones that seem to have been attacked by Bunnicula.

Now I have $11 worth of meyer lemons and also can make candied and chocolate dipped lemon peels! In lieu of a California visit, this will have to tide me over.

That's a good price for them - I've not been to Fairway for a while and have been paying Eli's prices.

I know. Last winter I paid Whole Paycheck prices and I bought 4 lbs of meyer lemons and some grapes for the embarrassing price of $21. The lemons were $4/lb and yes, I was desperate enough.
