James Beard Award Nominees 2008

The James Beard Awards have just published their nominees. I am elated to see two local hispanic chefs on the list for the Pacific division, Jaime Martin del Campo and Ramiro Arvisu from La Casita Mexicana in Bell. Does anyone know how chefs are nominated?

I'm thrilled that Saipin Chutima, of Lotus of Siam in Las Vegas, is nominated for best chef in the Southwest. No one at LOS even knew about it until I called them this morning.

i've been to lake park bistro in milwaukee as well. adam siegel was nominated last year as well. VERY good good. definitely should be on the list.

haven't been to sanford's but everyone raves about it...

The official nominee list came out today -- and Chow.com (Jane Goldman) was nominated for best "Website Focusing on Food, Beverage, Restaurant, or Nutrition."

Here's a link to the rest of the nominees:

Congratulations also go to nominees Meredith Arthur and Eric Slatkin of CHOW. They are nominated in the JBF Broadcast Media Awards: Webcast division for their production of "Obsessives: Innard Workings".

It appears it's those who entered, not the official nominee list.
It seems people can enter themselves.

As a chef that has the happy luck of being on the "longlist" this year I'm curious myself as to how those names are selected.
            anyone know?
I surely did not nominate myself.

              How are the nominees selected?
Anyone can submit a chef or restaurant for consideration during the open online call for entries in the fall. The Restaurant and Chef Awards Committee produces a nominating ballot based on the results of the open call, with up to 20 names in each category. This online ballot is available to more than 400 judges, who select the five official nominees in each category. The same judges then vote on these five nominees to choose the winners. There is no entry fee.

It's the "long list" of possible nominees, not quite the nominees themselves.

              M. Steven Ells from Chipotle is nominated for a James Beard Award..? A James Beard Award now means alot less in my eyes.

All it means is _someone_ nominated him for one. He, himself, could have done it or anyone else, for that matter. So, it doesn't really mean anything yet. This isn't a list of places actually nominated by the James Beard folks.
