This bright tavern/restaurant offers fun specials (mystery beer buckets) and delicious food.

Yellow Dog is a great addition to the Canton restaurant scene. It is about time that upper Canton area gains some serious food establishments. For too long Canton chowers have been forced to entertain at the Square or Can company, which is ok but something on this side of Canton is over due.

Both Yellow Dog and Annabel Lee's Taverns are bringing upscale food choices in a relaxed atmosphere at reasonable prices.

The fried oysters are an absolute must even if you don't eat fried oysters or like osyters this is a dish that just may convert you! Several friends had them at various times here and mentioned how great they were. My husband went on his own and agreed so, I was next in line. They were all right in singing their praises. Soft, delicate, not gritty, no rancid oil flavors, not greasy- a real treat.

I happened to go on a Thursday evening and the place was not overly crowded but doing a decent business for a week night in Canton. Thursday is their $4 mystery beer bucket- you get 5 bottled beers of the bar tender's choice which usually consists of a local fav. like Natty Boh and at least one higher end micro brew and the rest somewhere in between. You can not give any back however, they do encourage you to swap out with neighboring diners- cool way to meet new folks. This in general creates chatter at the bar and a friendly atmosphere.

Service here was superb. We never waited, needed or had to ask for anything including S&P while dining bar side. They do have a few tables downstairs and plenty more on the 2nd floor.

For my meal I tried the Fish tostadas- Grilled Mahi served over 2 crisp, not greasy, tostadas. It came with black beans simmered in beer, jicama slaw, & salsa verde on top the fish. The accompaniments were balanced in flavors and not too wet to make everything soggy.

The very best thing about Yellow Dog is their trial of many flavors on standard food items & their vegetarian offerings. Their veggies are anything but normal yet ,not far reaching such as: roasted cauliflower with crushed mustard seeds, sauteed shallots & brussel sprouts. They are the first non-fine dining establishment in Baltimore that I have seen menuing swiss chard as a side- yum!

We didn't dine their fore Valentine's Day but saw their Aphrodisiac menu and once more the Chef was experimenting with unusual ingredients and flavor pairings.
Give this place a try. Though the items sound normal they are anything but. Execution and service make this place a sure thing. Try it on a week night when it is less crowded and they will not disappoint. Heard they do fabulous bloody marys for Sat. brunch (closed on Sundays)- which will be my next visit.
I hope the neighborhood can help this place stay in business.

  1. I'm a fan of the Yellow Dog - I've been there a few times and typically enjoy myself. The only problem I've really run into with them is that their execution is sometimes uneven (slightly undercooked potato slices at brunch come to mind). Overall though I really do like their food and appreciate their choice of ingredients and menu selection. It's a great addition to Canton and I'm glad that other hounds are taking note of them.

    1. i love the Yellow Dog! the staff is great and friendly and the food unique but comforting at the same time. and they use all sustainable meat and animals products--good food that helps the environment. you can't go wrong there. on your next visit, try the spinach dip (if they have any left that night). its not what you think spinach dip is; its better and addictive. oh and the chicken with rosemary and thyme. it may seem like you have had this dish before, but once you've had it from the Yellow Dog, you will never eat it anywhere else again.
