Where are Southern African ingredients available in EasT Bay?

zinfanatic Feb 15, 2008 07:37 PM

I am giving a party to show my photos of our recent Botswanan and SA trip. I have some ideas for recipes thanks to Chowhounders on the Home Cooking board. Now I need to find some of the ingredients. I would like to find Peri Peri sauce, Castle beer, and SA wines. I live in Berkeley and would like to shop close to home if possible.

Cost Plus World Market carries Nando's Peri Peri sauce, at least at the SF location. I don't know how it compares to the local stuff in Botswana, but it's recruited a lot of fans to the Nando's Chicken chain.

Most of the African stores in the East Bay, including the one linked., don't carry liquor that I can recall. For beer it might be better to try a store like Ledger's Liquors in Berkeley. Maybe a separate post inquiring about which wine shops might carry South African wines and any specific winieries that might interest the OP.

Oriental Lucky Mart has stuff from a variety of African countries.

Spanish Table has several brands of Portugese piri piri sauce.

K&L in San Francisco has a large selection of South African wines.

I know that one of the stores at the Swan's Housewives Market in Old Oakland has African products. I'm just not sure what part of Africa. Believe they have sauces, spices, and maybe vegetables.

            Jack's Meats and African Products?

That's just a few blocks from Oriental Lucky Mart.

Yeah, no booze though. I wonder though if some of the liquor stores in that Old Oakland area carry African wines and beer.
