The Edison, early Friday evening--a good idea?

Has anyone been to The Edison early on a Friday evening, say for an after work drink? Do they have a happy hour of any kind on Fridays? Is it super hard to get in if you go, say, around 6:00PM? Yay or nay? If nay, can you recommend a better downtown bar--not super crowded or expensive--for a Friday after work thing?

  1. It's easy to get into any time before 7pm. The space is huge and I've never had problems.

    1. Usually if you go before 6:30-7, there's no issue getting in. I recall their happy hour, though I haven't been for a couple of months, was half price beers (down to $4) and discounted well drinks. I seem to remember their happy hour ending before 7, but I'm not sure. The early evening usually has the downtown work crowd, and a lot of them (us) clear out before the scene-y people get there.

      1. Around 6PM should be fine for getting in -- and I believe their HH ends at 7p (~40% off drinks).

        1. Good idea to go early, I don't think it will be too crowded on a Friday after work - have you tried calling for a reservation? It's a pretty big space. I went around 8 last Saturday and all the tables had "reserved" placards on them, we spoke with a waiter and he gladly let us sit at one as long as we promised to get up before the 9:30 reservation arrived - which gave us a good hour to eat. The tesla fries are yummy!

          1. It's easy to walk in around 6. Their drinks are strong!, and at happy hour prices, they're a real bargain. I don't recall happy hour prices on food.

No food discount indeed, but their somewhat-pricey bar grub are pretty decent. For a real meal, there's always Pitfire Pizza next doors or any of the Little Tokyo places a few (walkable) blocks down.

I heartily second Pitfire as a respite from the Edison. We're usually here before or after happy hour getting some carbs and a pitcher of Red Hook. It's nice to have some light sometimes.
