Kagawa Japanese (Mississauga) - Any Good?

I've been alternating between HiNote and Sushi Tei for years, but a colleague of mine lives by Kagawa (1177 Central Pkwy W) and wanted to try it.

Any reviews?

  1. Ever try Kumai on Hurontario just south of Britannia?

    1. Thought I'd look elsewhere for reviews and found this:

Almost seems too good to be true.

i'm almost hoping that this is a bit of sarcasm.

when the most popular dishes are spicy salmon rolls and the teriyaki bento, a 9.5 rating doesn't mean very much to me.

Princess, you have to compare apples to apples. If you're comparing a spicy salmon roll to a, well, spicy salmon roll, then maybe this place is pretty good. If you are looking for more exotic sushi than this place offers, well the comparison would be unfair.

Still, any place that gets a 9.5 would seem to have been rated by the owners mother, father, aunts and uncles.

exotic is one thing and quality sushi at all price points is welcome, as long as it's actually quality. typically, spicy anything is appropriate for lower quality fish only... otherwise you're masking the flavour and there are very few (and alarming) reasons why one would want to do such a thing.

I expect this would also apply to any sushi restaurant serving spicy tuna, spicy scallop, spicy hamachi roll, etc. and not just Kagawa. The same alarming reasoning should also be applied to ceviche, steak tartare, as well as unpastuerized dairy, fruit and honey products among others. The key is to know your source, or trust the system. In Toronto and the GTA there is a restaurant rating system- as I expect you know- in place that provides some assurance that you need not be concerned about contaminated food. For Canada, there is the CFIA which is concerned with the safety of all food consumed in Canada.
In any event, it seems unfair to judge a place one has never been to.

Kagawa has changed hands several times over the past 5-7 years. Its current version seems to be dead most of the time--the word I get cites iffy quality. The mall is tough for restos since H&H Supermarket soaks up most of the surrounding parking lots.Same is true of the original version of Miga Korean BBQ that sold and went downhill just around the corner. Sushi Tei is better but I still prefer Kumai to most others around Mississauga.

Yeah Kumai is the best in Mississauga.

      2. jimbay on dixie near matheson is an excellent japanese restaurant. try it. it's where i eat when i'm out that way, the same as zen in scarborough when i'm out east.

Along with Kumai, one of the few Japanese O/O sushi bar/restos in Mississauga. YoYo's up in Georgetown ain't bad, either.

        2. Heads-up.....I've been a hige fan of Kagawa's for years now. Until tonight that is. I constantly returned to this place because of the sushi master who never made a bad dish. I was shocked tonight when I entered Kagawa to learn that it's under new management. And the sushi master is gone. We ordered what we usually have there and was quite disapointed with the results. Does anyone know where the previous sushi master went? I think he was the best in North America. Any suggestions for a new sushi place in Mississauga?

The best in NA ?! Where else have you tried Japanese food besides Kagawa ?

          2. I was under the impression they closed down..I've gone by a couple of times the past few weeks to try the spicy salmon roll and it was always closed!
