new Taco Bite location in Williamsburg now open
Taco Bite has reopened at a new corner location at 310 S4th Street (aka 332 Rodney Street). They opened over the weekend. Their hours (I think) are 7am-10pm... open for breakfast. They are closed on Mondays.

re: Jack Barber
I picked up takeout from Taco Bite last night. OK this was insanely good. The area has definitely been lacking in "real" tacos since the demise of Matamoros. I always judge a Mexican restaurant by its guacamole, and this was great. Very fresh. They used tomatoes, which I liked in this case, though not always.
Anyway, on the most important part for me: the carnitas burrito is out of this world, one of the best I've ever had, and I've had more than a few. The meat was like the most perfect pulled/roast pork, flavorful without being too overwhelming. The whole thing seemed cooked on the outside in a way that held all the flavors together on the inside. It was also perfectly structurally cohesive: it didn't fall apart while eating it. I will be back, and soon. I did have it with jalapenos, which added a lot for me.
Taco Santana, which is only a block from Taco Bite, also has real and exceptional tacos. It's more of a takeout place. I always eat there, but the juke box is ear-splittingly loud. The bistec tacos there are terrific.

re: wleatherette
i'm pretty sure at both places they make the tortillas to order. what a huge difference that makes. there aren't a lot of places where you can get that in new york. i think they even made the chips to order. when my friend ordered guacamole at Santana, it took awhile to come out (not sure if "come out" makes sense when the kitchen is in the middle of the room!). the chips were a little oily, not in a bad way, and hot, fresh from the fryer. so good.
