Algerian food?

Robert Lauriston Feb 12, 2008 08:33 AM

Anybody know of any Algerian restaurants in the area? Searching the archive I find only places that closed or where the Algerian cook quit.

It's not Algerian food per se, but it's food made by Algerians... (OK, the owners, at least).

Café Algiers on Beale St. They are really a deli, but they make a mean falafel (one of my favorites in the city). And Zino makes a mean espresso too, btw.

      But no special Algerian dishes?

Unless they take orders off the menu, no.

Is there something in your criteria that disqualifies the two Cafe Grilllades locations? They have a number of Algerian dishes on their menus.

      Cafe Grillades
501 Hayes St, San Francisco, CA

      Cafe Grillades
851 Cherry Ave, San Bruno, CA 94066

Follow-up -- I just checked further; The Hayes Street location is closed, per Yelp, but the San Bruno location is open (I telephoned). Don't know`about the chef, but the owner is Algerian.

Thanks. Not much Algerian but couscous, which a past report said was nothing like Algerian couscous.
