  1. Sorry to say it's nowhere near the West Valley, but Quality Seafood smokes their own fish, including black cod (sablefish). It's cut into steaks, then hot smoked. Delicious. I think this is what you're looking for, because I'm unclear on what "smoked BBQ cod" is supposed to be.

I've got a writeup w/ photo of the black cod on my blog:

    1. I'm thinking that Barney Greengrass in Beverly Hills is your best bet but, try Brent's in your area as well.

      1. in ventura you can get bbq cod at Danny's deli on telephone in the valley i know you can get it also at Morts deli in reseda...i just wih i knew of a place here in Las Vegas

        1. Hi everyone, a couple years ago the owner of Label's Table told me that the last producer of barbequed cod stopped making it. I actually teared up. Apparently all the alte kakers passed away and the younger generations weren't buying it. It wasn't as popular as lox and very expensive and they just weren't buying it. SIGH. My favorite food, wiped off the face of the earth.

Oh my goodness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you thank you thank you. I called and they *make their own*. So cool.

              1. re: alexisgach

Please let me know how it turned out. Did you get some? How was it?

                1. re: mucho gordo

bbq cod does sound pretty darn good.

                  1. re: kevin

Cod is good almost anyway you can use it. I can imagine preparations that would not be nice - mint jelly? Peanut butter? - but everything I've done with it is just better than the last, or seems to be. What I've not had is BBQ, and now I think I need to.

I was supposed to go today but plans fell through. I will be going *soon*. :) I will update you, promise!

Brent's smoked cod is very good. We had it recently for a brunch.

Brents makes their own and it is absolutely the best smoked cod I can get anywhere including Miami and New York.

                        1. re: SIMIHOUND

And it tastes like the stuff you used to be able to get everywhere else?! I am so excited.

                          1. re: alexisgach

Yes it does. Their smoked fish is probably my most favorite food. (maybe alongside with some lox and whitefish, a nice bagel and iced coffee) :)

                            1. re: SIMIHOUND

Oh geez. I had no idea this was an endangered food!

I was in Ohio a few months back, got a deli platter and - there it was. Barbecued cod, the fish of my childhood and, fabulous.

Now I need to head to Brent's to try theirs.

And it makes me wonder - what else do they make from scratch, fishwise?

                          2. re: SIMIHOUND

Brent's BBQ Cod is wonderful, always very most, tender and fresh. The reason they make the cod is because they had trouble finding a supplier on the west coast. Their smoked fish plates are also so good and generous too (Super Fish Buffet For Two Combination Plate (Enough for Two) Lox, Cod, Whitefish and Cream Cheese with 4 Bagels. Best deli in the LA area.

I had the small platter of cod recently at Lenny's Deli and for 19 bucks with the bagel and cream cheese it was beyond tiny.

I did feel severely ripped off.

                                1. re: kevin

I have the same feeling. When I do is get the fish from them, get bagels from Western Bagel and cream cheese from the market and make my own platter at home. Good smoked fish is just expensive and to get it served to me makes it even more so.

                                    1. re: mucho gordo

No I called Brent's and asked... $35!!! But so worth it if it's the real deal. I swear to you all I'm going to go and give you an up to date account lol

                                      1. re: alexisgach

If it's $35/lb at another deli, then that kind of makes sense that they charge me 19 bucks for a tiny piece, maybe 2oz, 3oz tops plus a couple slices of tomatoes, a couple slice of cucumber, and the bagel and cream cheese.

                                        1. re: kevin

Yeah I guess it does, still so expensive! I'm with Simihound, go get the bagels and cream cheese yourself and do it at home! Where's Lenny's? They have cod too?

                                        2. re: alexisgach

Oh yes, it is the real deal. Now if I could find real deal sable which is like fish gold IMO. I never had it in LA but it is common in Miami where my mother moved to about thirty five years ago.

                                          1. re: SIMIHOUND

Yes, sable was all I could find while living on the east coast! I'm pretty sure they have it at Label's Table... I wouldn't be surprised if Nate 'n Al's has it too. They cut their own lox which suggests a bit higher end I think :)
