Santa's Kitchen in "Santa Claus" California, just north of Carpenteria had (they may be closed now...)the BEST DATE SHAKES EVER!!!:)

My dad used to take me kicking & screaming there once a year for the what was back in my "childhood" the "bain of my existense"! Now as an adult I dream of finding a Date Shake that good here in L.A. ! What a great memory....

Dont really know anywhere around here that has great date milk shakes, but if you get some great dates and some vanilla ice cream you are already there! The best date shakes i ever had and probably will ever have were at this little road side stand in Indio, california(where there are date trees growing everywhere) where i used to pass once a year on my way to the Grand Canyon.

Santa Claus CA may be gone shortly; I saw a piece within the last two weeks desribing how the really funky looking Santa on the roof, which is made of something like stucco on a wood and chicken-wire frame, is now leaking like a sieve and earthquake damaged &is threatening to crash through the roof., and so will be coming down; not clear if anyone has, or wants to spend, the $$$ to rebuild it...

On the other hand, look what Hollywood's done with what was onc a tin and wood temporary ad sign for a real estate development called "Hollywoodland" once the last four letters fell down...

Back on topic: stoppped at Hadleys' today; the date shake point of a fairly dismal Palm Springs trip...

Mother's markets in Orange County have a great selection of natural shakes, date shakes included. If you're not close enough to OC, check out any better health foods store with a service counter near you.

If you are really looking for THE BEST then you have to go to Hadley's Fruit Orchards in Cabazon, very near Palm Springs. They grow their own dates, among other fruit. I have stopped in numerous times over the years. The Mecca of the desert for date shakes.

when in indio(east of palm springs), check out shields date shack. in addition to a great date shake, they have an interesting movie about the production of dates in their old theater in the back of the store.

In a strange coincidence the latest, December, issue of Vogue magazine has Jeffrey Steingarten writing an entire story about dates and date shakes, including giving what reads like a wonderful recipe for making your own at home. The recipe is adapted from Shields Date Gardens and includes phone numbers for obtaining the necessary ingredients, one of which is date sugar. For date sugar phone Shields Date Gardens at 1-800-414-2555.

Yes, I remember my dad turing red & whisking us away when they got to the 'Sex Life of a Date' part of the movie...

Unfortunately, the Orange Inn on PCH closed a long long time ago to make way for a strip mall & house-covered hills. At least they were close! If you are feeling wild, try a banana-date shake - also thrilling.
