  1. I grew up in Laguna, visit my parents there often and IMHO Not a lot of outstanding places to eat down there. It seems as if the good places disappear in a year or two and the mediocre last forever.
In Laguna there is a new taco stand on Mermaid St. called La Serena which I like. Also Zinc Cafe on Ocean has good salads, baked goods.
My restaurant experiences in Laguna mostly disappointment... catering to middle of the road/ bland /tourist palate.
Wish you luck, post if you find anything Great.

      It's worse in Newport - don't complain!

Agree totally with Tony & Tanya's suggestions, but my favorite is still Cafe Zoolu on Glenneyre - tiny, but some of the best swordfish ever! For over-the-top, but still fun Italian, we like Ti Amo - very romantic, but liked it better when it was Monique's.

BTW - The Surf & Sand Hotel's Splashes is a must-do for pre-dinner drinks or possibly lunch - there's no setting like it near. Breakfast & dinner are kindof dicey, but lunch is usually good and the setting spectacular. Ask for a table off the bar right over the beach.

There are quite a few good places I would recommend in the area. Picayo in Boat Canyon shopping center is special and great in it's new location. Javier's across from the Hotel Laguna is packed every night and serves good Mexican food. Coyote Grill in So. Laguna features lobster tacos and semi-ocean view terrace.
Splashes at the Sand and Surf hotel has great ocean viewing and wonderful for cocktails or lunch. Jack's in Dana Point on the PCH is a nice , friendly breakfast spot. Finally, Las Brisias in Laguna offers THE view and , surprisingly , good meals. Try the swordfish . Hope this helps !
