LA MILL, honey I'm home.

Count me in the "happy camper" category, regarding LA MILL. I went with DebbieW yesterday, and next week spousal unit will be in tow. We sat at the bar, and had the most delightful combination of delicious coffee, wonderful breakfast, and servers/barrista's(Max) who were engaging and fun to talk to. This fledgling business is not offering seamless service at this point, but no doubt it is around the corner. A fellow next to me had ordered a cappuccino, which arrived after a lengthy wait. The server apologized and said that it was on the house. I get the feeling that the owner and staff really care and are passionate about what they are bringing to our city. Debbie's coffee was from the Clover machine, and yes it was astounding. I loved the body of this cup---sorry that I forget which bean she chose. I chose to try the Chemex method for my coffee, as I've been toying with the idea of purchasing this contraption for myself. My coffee choice was Sumatra, and while I enjoyed the coffee, I don't think that I will be using a Chemex in our home, as there is definitely a learning curve to making a perfect brew in a Chemex. Debbie ordered a second coffee in the form of Cappuccino. It is served in a small cup, and the flavor was off the charts ummmazing, from the taste that I had. I'm thinking that one could easily (and happily) have 2 cappuccinos, and this is my plan for next time. I'm also anxious to try LA MILL'S siphon method of coffee brewing, as the buzz from conversations I'd overheard were very enthusiastic about Siphon'ed coffee. As for our breakfast, I get the feeling that egg dishes are the way to go, even though I loved my deviation. Debbie had scrambled eggs with a heap of shredded smoked salmon on top, and asparagus tucked into the side. It was served with toasted brioche slices, and the pricing of $12, didn't seem unfair. There are several other egg preparations that I want to eat my way through---the baked eggs en cocotte, specifically. My breakfast was Pumpkin Polenta. When it first arrived, I was disappointed to see a small amount of food in the bottom of my large bowl. One taste, and I did a HUGE about face. Mildly sweet, topped with mascarpone cheese, drizzles of a caramel like syrup, and candied pecans. Each bite was intensely flavored and wonderful. I ate slowly and deliberately, which let the Pumpkin polenta satisfy, but not satiate. It was $9. I will happily drive from Sherman Oaks to Silverlake anytime, and I aim to be a regular at LA MILL.

  1. Nice post. P.S. I use a Chemex at home and it's really easy. You can purchase the filters online with the beaker and I'd recommend getting a $4 heat diffuser from Surfas, to keep the coffee hot while it's steeping. Chemex results in an incredibly clean brew.

    2. Thanks Jeff. I have forgotten exactly the name of the bean I had for my cup from the Clover, but it's the one on the bottom of the menu page where the Clover options are listed. I preferred the slightly thicker texture of the Clover-made coffee to the Chemex, although I certainly enjoyed watching and learning as Max made your Chemex. Next time we go together, you drive!
