California Chicken Cafe

I know it's a chain - but is it any good? Better than Koo Koo Roo?

I love it. It's one of those places that's great for lunch or a quick affordable casual dinner. Very healthy roasted chicken, good side dishes. I really love their Chinese Chicken Pasta Salad. It's pretty big, 2 people can share it. It's got green lettuce, mandarin oranges, chicken, pasta, crunchy things, carrot (I think), nuts and a light chinese dressing. All the locations I've been to are usually busy, but they manage to still serve you pretty quickly. Some people don't care for it, but the ones that do like it I think are like me, you get cravings for it and use it as a good stand-by. They also have really tasty wraps and roasted potatoes. All the dishes are pretty much based on the roasted chicken, but you can get things vegetarian there, as well. The one on Melrose is next to a laundry mat, so often I'll get a bite to eat while my clothes are drying.

Somehow I remember a call to Elmer Dills, years ago, by a man claiming that California Chicken was the same recipe as that of the fried chicken he had come to love in (of all places) Montreal, and is evidently distinctive to that area -- until California Chicken, of course. But I suppose calling the place "Montreal Chicken" doesn't have as much zing.

My local is also the one on Melrose in Hollywood, and it's generally too busy, and with no available parking, for me to bother. But the one time I went, I liked it just fine.

I know. In LA "no available parking" means not willing to walk more than half a block. ;-)

    2. It blows Koo Koo Roo out of the water. I ate there today for lunch...great sides, I really like their chicken pasta and their vegtable soup. Their wraps are pretty good too. Chicken is moist and not dry like koo koo roo. The only reason I don't eat there is the SM location is VERY crowded for lunch and its hard to park.
