Monday Night Birthday Dinner Rec's

italiana3 Feb 6, 2008 01:58 PM

Hi All
Any recommendations for my birthday dinner ?Looking for something with great atmosphere and excellent food. I prefer Italian, but I am open to suggestions. I have lived in Southern CA for a year, and I am trying to hit all of the great "hot spot" restaurants. I have been to Mozza (pizzeria and osteria), Osteria Angelini, Simon LA, Ivy, Penthouse in Santa Monica and a great Italian in Brentwood (forgot the name!)

I was thinking of Jar or AOC. Any other ideas? I will be dining with my husband.
Thank You!

I'd go with the $35 prix fixe bistro night at Jiraffe in Santa Monica. The food is fantastic there and this ranks among the best deals in all of LA. Great place.

i'm sure you know that neither jar nor AOC is italian :)

      la botte
      il carpaccio
      amarone kitchen
      all' angelo

or for another non-italian option, josie is my favorite.
btw, was it vincenti in brentwood?

        Via Veneto in Santa Monica

I'll second Via Veneto - it's one of my favorites. However, I don't understand the raves for All' Angelo. I ordered a pasta with scampi and it was god-awful. I don't know if my expectations were too high - I was hoping it would be similar to the one at Via Veneto - but it was way over-sauced and had a similar flavor to the spaghetti with lobster at Bizou in Santa Monica. My husband's lamb chops also had an off flavor and were over-cooked. Despite the lovely room, good first courses and friendly staff, I doubt I'll be going back.
