The Merchant in Jersey City?

Going to visit with a group of friends from college soon. We don't get together often, but we manage to have a good time when we do. The organizer has picked the Merchant as the place to meet. It is centrally located for everyone and seems like it can handle a group of 40-somethings who can still get a little loud and boisterous.

I've seen the menu online, and some negative CH comments, and I'm a little concerned about the food. I get a "trying to be an upscale TGI Fridays" vibe. If you've been there recently, what's your take? I'd appreciate either good menu suggestions or a recommendation of some other place within walking distance (we'll be drinking at the Merchant's bar until everyone shows up).

Thanks in advance.

  1. Haven't been there in a while maybe 6 months ago, but I had a really good hangar steak there. I can't remember what sides or dessert I had but I remember they were average at best.

    1. So, Sloth how was the Merchant? I've only been there for drinks. Or do you still need dinner suggestions?

Haven't been yet. The get together is in March. Just trying to plan (way) ahead. However, I am meeting with other friends in Newark this week-end. Maybe I'll take a detour to the Merchant and scope it out.

Have a drink in OX (some good cocktails and beer, there) the food is delicious and reccommended. There's also Marco and Pepe practically next door to Merchant with some good food (and good choices for a mixed group). But the mixed drinks there are not as good as the food.

            Follow-up report

The Merchant is what it is, a nice pub with inoffensive grub. The drinks were fine, the Bloody Marys had real tomato juice. The food was standard. Calamari was from frozen, but cooked nicely. Ravioli were not bad. Burgers were probably the best as each one was cooked to order with no complaints from a fussy crowd. Service was very accomodating for a 10 person group. So, not destination dining but an acceptable place to hang with friends. We left happy.
