You may want to consider eating at the Improv. We went to a show there a few weeks ago and I think you had to buy food there (or maybe it was a 2 drink minimum). Anyhow it seemed like most people were eating before the show. My gf had a burrito and I had a bbq pork sandwich and they were both very tasty.
Just up the street is Luna Grill for an inexpensive, relaxed dinner. For something a little fancier and pricier, The Daily Grill is just around the corner on M Street and 18th.

re: MaxDC
All the food at the Improv is "catered" by California Tortilla. It's ok, but don't go in with even remotely high expectations...It's exactly what you would expect: burritos, quesadillas, chips and salsa, made somewhere else, and trucked over where it sat for a while before you order it.
You could even try to eat at Cafe Citron or Pizzaria Paradisio?

How about Tabard Inn or Vapiano? A little bit further down is also Mark and Orlandos and Dupont Grille.

re: Elyssa
Elyssa, Tabrad Inn and Dupont Grille are not places I normally think as "girls night out" destinations. All your usual suggestions for people are quite pricey and the go-to places. Like someone already stated, there will be a two drink min and I'm sure the show was somewhat pricey, so I would suggest the group hit up Luna Grill, Front Page, James Hobson or Penang. If you do want to go a little nicer and not an "obvious" recommendation, check out Panache. There are small plates/tapas, so you can share or not fill up just in case you want food at the show too.
