Sabor a Mexico is Closed!

Bob Brooks Feb 2, 2008 11:13 AM

Got quite a shock when I showed up today. There is a sign on the door saying that they closed effective Feb. 1. They will relocate temporarily to someplace on Jefferson Blvd. (sorry I didn't get the actual address) while they look for a new permanent location.

The mystery deepens. I called the old number which referred to a 'new' number that was disconnected. Hopefully someone will transcribe the new 'temporary' address and edit the linked Place. TIA!

That's interesting. I wouldn't really consider that location particularly desirable at all. It's really too bad Sabor a Mexico has left; it was rather unique in our area.

It's not Estilo D.F. style, but I must give a plug to Tacos Don Jorge a few blocks east on Venice Boulevard. Absolutely awesome al pastor burritos and pretty much everything else. They used to be the very popular taco truck parked at that location and now have their own shop.

At the NE corner of Venice and Cattaraugus, next door to Autenico furniture.

not good. it figures that this would happen a few weeks before I temporarily take up part-time residence in the neighborhood. Please keep us posted if you find out more.

Not too far away from the old Sabor A Mexico space is Gloria's Cafe (just a bit west on Venice Blvd. on the N side of the street). Good Mexican and Salvadoran food and friendly, family run sit down restaurant.

I may try it but the real question is: are their quesadillas the same style as those 'estilo DF' at Sabor a Mexico?

Oooh! Thanks for the post! I had actually been craving one of those "Estillo DF" quesadillas today.

Hopefully, they will re open at a location with more seating.

            Keep us posted!

I went by to see the sign and it says soon it will open temporarily @ 2624 W Jefferson Los Angeles CA Which is between 6th and 7th ave

But they are still looking for more permanent digs.

I went by today and the Neon signage was going up. There is no Dining room at the new location. It seems like it will be window service only. I would guess at the rate they are moving they will be open in about 2 weeks. which all I can say is Its much quicker than the fathers office expansion.

So where is one supposed to eat - in the car (assume there's parking)?

I am not sure if the parking lots are for them or other businesses. There seems to be decent street parking or you could always take the # 38 bus which leaves you right there. Since there seems to be no dining room that is probably why this will be temporary digs for this place. But No Fear Taqueria Sanchez on Inglewood has basically the same set up and they do a brisk business.

Thanks. Burritos and stuff travels well, not so sure about their yummy quesadillas though...

I don't think Sanchez has Mexico City style quesadillas... but the Nopales Gorditas are pretty credible... in addition the Lomo Tacos (not portable)... and the Shrimp Caldo (not portable unless you want a stained carpet)... are the best dishes there... other stuff that is relevant to a fellow Chowhounder like Susan is similarly not feasibly portable... the Camarones Rancheros etc.,

We drove by last week, actually we were in Culver City, and decided to go and see if they were already open, we found it, but t wasn't open yet. One thing that I am not sure about, is the area were the new location is, this was our first time in the area, I don't remember been around there ever before.

That is the new location for Sabor. Thanks for the pictures. Not much of what is posted on Chowhound has been about this area. I hope it gives us an opportunity to explore and find yummy new things.

It was earlier in the Post and is correct in the Linkage:

But wait, isn't this just supposed to be a temporary location. And, isn't this close to downtown and not Culver City?

Well it is "temporary" until they find a new place which I don't think they have. This new "temporary" place is what will be opening in 2 weeks. Remember the old place was temporary as well. The new place is about half way between their old location and downtown LA.

The location was pretty crappy, and cheek to jowl with the other stores.

I liked that mexico, what is it df style stuff, the huraches with the sauce, good stuff, and mexican cokes in the bottle.

Poor Sabor A Mexico. I drove by and was shocked the sign was missing as well.

I hope they find a nicer location. That was just a weird spot, even if freeway adjacent ;).
Keep us posted on their relocation.

I remember stopping by there a while ago(the old location) and chatting with the owner. He seemed to be somewhat disappointed with the lack of business and I think he thought it had to do with the location and was looking for another one.I liked the food there (except the burrito which I thought was really bad-way too much rice-mealy) and wanted to try more stuff but never got around to it.
