Excellent Chinese restaurant in Miami
My wife and I have been going to South Garden Chinese Restaurant for several years. Over the past year we have been very busy to go out to many restaurants and have not been back to our favorite Chinese restaurant in awhile. So we decided to go back to South Garden, located at 10855 SW 72 St. in Miami and found out that the owner had sold the restauant and the staff and cook were different from who we knew before. So at first we were hesitant but decided to give it a try. We were happy that the menu had remained the same and also added some specialty dishes for the week.
Since we knew our favorite dishes, it was easy for us to compare the new cook's cooking to what were were very pleased with before. Since I am a creature of habit, when I like a particular meal I don't deviate from it. So my wife and I ordered the same food. The soup we ordered was chicken and corn soup (for two). This was even better than what we had with the previous cook. The next item we ordered was something new to us since it was a special of the week. It was black mushrooms with baby bok choy. This was excellent and the price was very reasonable ($8.95). While this can be considered a meal in itself, we ususally order more food than we can consume as we take half of what we order home (except for the soup). The black mushrooms were of superb quality and I should know, as when I go to New York City, I buy the best quality dried black mushrooms in Chinatown and take them back with me to Miami. So I highly recommend the black mushrooms and baby bok choy.
My wife just became a lifetime member of Weight Watchers this past week and was told at her weekly meeting that if you want to eat at a Chinese restaurant and are concerned with the amount of sodium or what you each, order the shrimp with freshly cooked bean sprouts. We didn't see it on the menu but she ordered it anyway and when it came out, it looked terriffic! More than that, I tried it and both my wife and I are convinced that this too was an excellent choice.
Now it came my turn. I ordered what I always order and you don't see this at any other restaurant. It is called Paper Wrapped Chicken. It is chunks of freshly cooked chicken with a mixture of Chinese vegetables and black mushrooms in a tasty sauce. This too was excellent even though I was used to it having a slight fresh ginger flavor. So I rank this as equal to what I had with the previous chef/cook.
Overall, we were even more pleased than when we ate there before, even though it was excellent then. I highly recommend this restaurant over other Chinese resatuants in the general area and we have tried some of the other excellent Chisese restaurants, including Tropical Chinese Restauarnt.
I read some previous comments on this restaurant prior to me signing on to Chowhound.com and frankly I was astonished. From what the comments were said, it can either be someone who wants to be malisicous and perhaps favors another Chinese restaurant rather than this one, another Chinese restaurant owner trying to have their competition fail or it is someone who ususally gets chicken choy mein or chop suey at a takeout Chinese restaurant and is not familiar with quality Chinese food.
Again, I highly recommend this restaurant.
I went some years (5-7) back with my family after trying the dim sum and found the food rather poor quality (thickened, poor sauces, slimy meats) and never ventured back in the evening time. Glad to hear the meals are now on par with the dim sum. I'll have to swing by there again
I actually live in the area and South Garden is my "too tired to cook lets get take out place" What I love is that if you order something, all you have to do is asked them to modify it and they will usually with no extra charge. We are constanly asking them to add more vegetables to some of the dishes so that we can at least fake that we are eating healthy and it is consistenly good. They just openend a PANDA EXPRESS literally next door and I am hoping that it does not affect the restaurant, it shouldnt, but it could and I am hoping that it does not.
