Marseille or ViceVersa

My boyfriend and I are celebrating my birthday with dinner and a show on a Sat night in Feb. I've looked around this site and I think I've narrowed it down to Marseille or ViceVersa, but I'm having some trouble deciding! I know they are two different cuisines, but we like both. We are looking for a nice, somewhat romantic dinner that won't break the bank (he's paying, but I don't want his wallet to suffer!). Any suggestions on which to choose and why?

is it just me ... I was quite put off by the wine list at Marseille ... shouldn't there be a better selection in the $40-50 / bottle range ??

Most places in that price range have more reasonable selections, no ?

    A midtown issue ???

It's not just you, but it's not just Marseille, either. It is the unfortunate trend of moderate priced restaurants pushing a lot of very expensive wine to customers who don't have a clue. Years ago, the rule was that a bottle of wine should cost about the same as a main course. Now a bottle ranges from the cost of a 3-course meal up into the stratosphere. At least Marseille does not mark up the prices as much as many others do, and they do choose their wines carefully, so you can get a good bottle at a moderate price, though with limited choice.

Add one more to the V V support. Love Marseille but it's not romantic. And just so you know the food and service is very good at V V so you are not by any means settling on V V just because it's the more romantic of the two.

I agree.. Marseille is bit too bustling for a couple.. I went there for a group party and found the food and ambience to be pretty good...

Yep! I agree with the posts above. Vice Versa has a romantic feel to it and that is why I celebrated my anniversary there.

I agree. Love Marseille, but VV is more special.

Marseille, which I like a lot, is a bright, bustling brasserie and not romantic.
