an in between lunch and dinner meal in Chicago
A group of foodies will be in Chicago next Tuesday for a convention at the Galleria Merchetti: NW of the Chicago Loop on Erie Street and close to Milwaukee Ave. We need a more casual place with serious food around 2-5 in the afternoon. Anything ethnic or a local institution would be great!

That's at 825 W. Erie, just west of Halsted Street. They serve until 2:30 in their Joe Marchetti's Ristorante Italiano. www.galleriamarchetti.com
There are a lot of places within a long walk of there and open in the afternoon.
Top pick for serious foodies: Avec is a well-known small-plates restaurant about 3/4 mile southeast of there. It and Blackbird, its sister restaurant next door, are excellent places serving contemporary cuisine with a French flair, from Chef-owner Paul Kahan. They open at 3:30 every day. www.avecrestaurant.com
Greek Town is about 3/4 mile south of there along Halsted, and the Greek restaurants that are open for lunch - most of them - stay open all afternoon. For links to their websites and a discussion of the best of them, see www.chowhound.com/topics/119233
Kitsch'n River North is about a half mile northeast of there, and specializes in breakfast and light lunch items, open all day. www.kitschn.com
Full-service upscale restaurants within half a mile include Erie Cafe (a steakhouse, www.eriecafe.com ) and Paramount Room (a gastropub-like restaurant, www.paramountroom.com ), and both are open all afternoon.

re: nsxtasy
Thanks for the response. We were thinking more ethnic oriented. My friend just found the info on a Polish restaurant in the area called Czerwone Jabluszko: Red Apple Restaurant. Have you heard? It is located on Milwaukee Ave. Anyway, any more info would be appreciated. We can't wait to get back to Avec, one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago.

re: napolean
Czerwone Jabluszko is at 3121 N. Milwaukee Ave., about six miles northwest of Galleria Merchetti, so it's not exactly close by. Podhalanka is another well-known Polish restaurant, about a mile north and a mile west of Galleria Merchetti.
