BBQ Shack - Paola

I was born and raised in Overland Park but now live in Michigan. We're returning for a visit this spring. I recently watched on Food Channel a story about The BBQ Shack in Paola. Is it worth the drive or should I just stick to Jack's, etc.. Thanks,

    SonyBob - I have not been there either - but, I guess the local folks say it's great and it is always packed. So, if you go, you better report back.

      make sure you get one of those stuffed jalapenos that they showed on the Food Network. THey looked amazing.

        We thought it was excellent! We just ate there a few weekends ago. We got the sampler platter, so we were able to try a lot of different things. To be honest, I usually go for the sides when we get BBQ, but at this place, it's all about the meat for me! The chicken wings were amazing, and I'm not usually a huge chicken wing fan, but they smoke them and deep fry them, and they are crispy and wonderful! The only thing I didn't care for was the brisket as it was a little tough for me, but that could have been a fluke, or maybe a BBQ efficionado would appreciate it. The owner was super nice, and he was taking an awesome looking turkey out of the smoker when we were leaving- I don't know if it's on the menu, but make sure you order it if it is... the skin was such a wonderful mahogany color! And don't miss the deep-fried brownie bites!

          The parents are coming to visit for a few days in July and ever since seeing The BBQ Shack on Food TV he won't stop talking about how he wants to go there. My question is, how does it compare to the BBQ legends in KC? Since moving to KC a year ago, I have become a devoted fan of OK Joes and LCs and had planned on taking them there until Guy Fieri messed up that plan. They are getting in late Friday and leaving early Monday and since most of the BBQ joints are closed on Sunday it leaves us with only Saturday.

            while you're down in Paola you might as well try two places...do a little google research on a place named Hillsdale Bank Bar BQ- limited open hours (fri thru sunday) but the reviews appear very favorable

              Sorry guys, " best laid plans of mice and men ---". Didn't make it to the Shack on this trip. Only had a chance to hit Jack's in Overland Park. Great as usual. However, for one meal I had the highly touted lamb ribs and I didn't care for them. Lamb just doesn't suit my idea of good "Q". On the other hand, my wife had a bowl of the gumbo. It was fabulous with great flavors with a nice filo undertone. Who woulda' thunk it!
