"The Country Club" Dinner Report

I posted a few days ago about a new restaurant in the bywater that was open late. I finally got a chance to try it.

I always had the impression that it was mostly gay club, but I found out that the owners are trying to become more of a neighborhood spot. In december they hired a new chef that wrote an all new menu.

One thing I noticed was that when you walk in, there is a big chalk board with all of the specials on it. I happened to go in on a night when it was really quiet in the dining room but the bar was really busy. Since I was eating by myself I decided to sit at the bar.

I wasn't sure what to eat, but since the chef was around I decided to ask him. He recommended the Razor Clam Ceviche app ($9) and the Lamb Sweetbreads entree ($14), both specials. The chef also recommended some wines to pair with the food.

The razor clams were delicious. I haven't had razor clams since I moved to New Orleans and I was pleasantly surprised to find them. The chef said that he was the only restaurant in New Orleans that his seafood purveyor knew was serving them. The ceviche had red onions, cilantro, a couple of types of oranges, and garlic, in addition to the clams. The ceviche was fresh and light. The clams were super clean and tender not chewy. It was served in four razor clam shells.

The sweetbreads were lamb sweetbreads, which I have never had. They were served with caramelized rainbow chard and yucca sticks. The sweetbreads had been floured and fried and were really soft on the inside. The sauce that they were served with was a dark and rich sauce with caramelized onions and bacon.

For dessert I had the Kaluah and Mint and Pot de Creme. It was much like a creme burlee but without the crispy sugar. Texturally it was also a little softer. The flavor was excellent. Strong but not overwhelming.

I really enjoyed my meal. I think that it is the best the bywater has to offer, no fried oyster poboys here. I will be back to try some of the regular menu food.

When I paid my check I saw that on Thursdays they have a wine and cheese pairing. I will come back for that and post soon.
