Rancho Grande - 24th and Treat - SF - Pupusas and cactus tacos - Report
A friend of mine brought me to Rancho Grande on Thursday night, after she tried their food for the first time last weekend. There are actually two storefronts with identical awnings called Rancho Grande on 24th St. This one is further west, on 24th between Treat and Folsom. I don't think the other one offers food, though I could be wrong. The storefront has produce, a butcher and other items, but in the back there is a small counter area and a menu with several choices for food and smoothies. The food was made to order and was very good!
We ordered two cheese pupusas and two cactus tacos. It took a little while, but it was worth the wait. The pupusas were handmade as we waited, and were very good. I didn't love the curtido, which had a bit too much oregano for my taste, but the pupusas themselves had a good consistency, and as can be guessed, were very hot and fresh. The tacos were made using thick (maybe homemade? maybe bought from somewhere like La Palma?) tortillas and were piled with a generous serving on pan fried bite-sized cactus pieces, which were nicely spiced (not sure what flavors exactly) and topped with queso fresco, salsa and a dollop of thick sour cream.
We managed to finish everything, even though it was quite a lot of food. Prices include taxes, and we didn't get any drinks, so our total bill was exactly 8 dollars (before tip). Great deal, and nice to have a reliable place that can make pupusas on the spot.

I went for lunch today with a Mexican friend. The food was good, and an excellent value.
We got two pupusas (one with cheese and loroco, one with chicharron) and a cactus taco; we could have ordered one pupusa each and been quite full.
The cactus taco was great; both of us liked the loroco pupusa better than the chicharron, which was not as flavorful as we expected. They had to call one of the clerks back from the front to make my taco because apparently she (a Mexican lady) specializes in making tacos and the Salvadoran lady makes the pupusas. I think they said that the woman pounding out tortillas was Guatemalan.
My friend got one of their health juices (one for anemia, one for cholesterol, etc), but didn't like that the fruit had been blended rather than juiced.
A man sitting next to us got a soup that looked wonderful, with big pieces of deeply colored beef and chunky vegetables. The Mexican clerk told us that they can make soup with any type of meat on request (there is a butcher counter in the store).
The tortillas are definitely handmade. I bought some at La Palma and took a picture of the two bags next to each other--the La Palma tortillas are much thicker and larger in diameter. Both are sold very hot and fresh with a pleasant corn aroma. Taste test tonight!

I'm almost certain this is the place I popped into for a spur of the moment pupusa while doing some pre-tahoe Mexican shopping. I think I had a pupusa revuelta, or anyway it was the standard bean/cheese filling with maybe a whisper of pork. I didn't think the pupusa was as good as the one I had at the little stand in the food mall off of Mission near 22nd or 21st on the west side of the street, but this was a 1 sample experience so I didn't post about it yet. It might have been Antojitos Salvadorenos Aminta, which Ruth likes.
There is some counter seating at the back, maybe 4 high bar chairs. They also had some interesting looking sausages and big dry cured things that I haven't seen before; unfortunately the teenager working the meat counter didn't know what they were.
Also, I have to agree that the wait is surprisingly long, we're talking something like 25 minutes for my pupusa, and nobody else was there! It was quite fresh, however.
